The reason your hair looks like that is chemical streighting does major damage to your hair. You should be using a shampoo and conditioner for damaged or treated hair as well as a deep conditioner atleast once a week. I also recomend finding a leave in conditioner.
If you have just had your hair chemically streightened, you shouldn't need to use a streighting iron. If you can try an anti frizz serum or sumthing or a product to get it streight and smooth. If you feel you have to use an iron on it you need to go to a hair dressers and ask for a heat protectant product, its usually a sprey that u apply befor you apply the hot iron to protect your hair from further heat damage.
As for tips on useing a streightening iron, its pretty easy, just apply the heat protectant spray ( which will also help the iron glide over your hair easyer) and then start at the top and slide it down. You may need to repeat this abit on the ends of your hair afue times. I don't think I have any "tips" really.
You'r going to have to take good care or your hair now as its going to be damaged and far more delecate. If you want to spend the money you could even look into getting a hair treatment at the salon.
