I'm sure that you're all bored shitless of this topic, and those who aren't are pot-heads anyway. But why is marijuana illegal? Can somebody please give me a few positive points for having marijuana illegal?
-
Why is it illegal?
-
For the same reason alcohol should be illegal. It's addictive, causes you to make poor decisions, and do things you otherwise wouldn't do. I've heard it can also do permanent damage to the brain.Only reason alcohol isn't illegal is because of our history and culture.
-
We live in a time where the stress and strain of daily living is too much for a lot of folks, and they seek escape from it by means of drugs that numb it away. Drug use is a symptom of the real problem...not the problem itself. That said, I agree with the assessment that the reason alcohol is legal and marijuana is not is because of the culture.

Pot is illegal??? o shit!!! just kiddini think its dumb how pot is illegal, but cigarettes arent.the last time i checked, cigarettes werent the best for your health.pot isnt either, but in my opinion it isnt half as bad as smoking. when i would smoke,i would wake up the next morning feeling like i was hungover (i have asthma and bronchitis),but when i would smoke pot, it wouldnt bother me at all.(i dont smoke cigs anymore now,but i have pot every now and then)

I thought Marijuana was legal in Canada as long as you didn't sell it??But I agree on the cigarettes. They do horrible damage to the body, are horribly addictive and they not only harm the person smoking them but also the people around them. Not to mention it doesn't help how the cigarettes companies add additives and such to make the cigarettes even more addictive. I’m very happy that Ohio is a smoke free (in public) state now, I’m all for people having the free will to smoke but when it endangers my life I have a BIG issue with it.

Well, marijuana can be addictive, as can food and exercise. It's just another case of a minority of people being excessive. And although it does change your behaviour slightly, it is rarely dangerous as its main effect is a very relaxing and mellow high. And as for brain damage, the only effect that marijuana has on the brain for regular users is the intended high.
And as for alcohol being part of our culture and history, marijuana has been part of human culture for thousands of years, mainly for its medicinal uses. In America, prohibition for marijuana and alcohol started at the same time, but people didn't know the real effects of marijuana at the time (and obviously still don't). When marijuana was introduced to Americans it was at a time when cocaine and heroine was becoming a big problem, so to help with prohibition they threw marijuana in the same category as lethal drugs. At one point they were even saying that marijuana is worse than heroine! It was all misinformation and lies that turned the public against marijuana, not to mention extreme prejudice against the pot smoking Mexicans coming across the border.

Yes, cigarettes are dangerously toxic and addictive, but marijuana isn't. As it stands at the moments marijuana is quite dangerous for numerous reasons, most of which are a problem CAUSED by prohibition! Paraphernalia laws have impeded the development and marketing of water pipes and other, more advanced technology that could significantly reduce the harmfulness of marijuana smoke. Like vaporisers, they heat up marijuana to the temperature needed to release the THC without burning the plants and releasing the harmful toxins. Prohibition encourages the sale of pot that has been contaminated or adulterated by insecticides, Paraquat, etc., or mixed with other drugs such as PCP, crack and heroin. Not to mention that the illegal sales of marijuana increases the price making it uneconomical to consume marijuana orally, the best way to avoid smoke exposure altogether; this is because eating typically requires two or three times as much marijuana as smoking.Alcohol prohibition did not work; it was an unenforceable law because it went against the wants of the people. Marijuana use has survived but due to the lack of truthful information it never got the support it needed to become legal again. But that’s changing now; all scientific studies are showing that marijuana is safer than both alcohol and cigarettes! With thousands of deaths caused by alcohol and tobacco every year, would you not prefer people used a recreational drug that has not caused a single known health related death?

I could be very wrong about that or it could have changed. I know when I was 19 and in Toronto you could visibly see people growing it in their windows. When we asked about it we were told by several people that Marijuana was legal as long as you don't go out trying to sell it.

Yeah you probably know what happend when they made alcohol illegal... lmao
-
OMGThis annyos me people think its legal in canada, IT ISN'T!!!!It's illegal to take, sell, unless its medical and you have a subscription.
-
When I drove through Canada on our way to Alaska, especially in British Columbia, People smoke it openly. It might be against the law, but that doesn't really stop anyway.
-
You really don't need to be rude.
-
That's exactly it, to protect people from themselves. Whilst there may be a lot of educated people out there who genuinely want to use it for recreational use, and will use it safely. There are a lot more idiots who will abuse it and destroy their life. Same can be said for alcohol, some drugs and gambling.
-
Alcohol is 100x worse then pot. The worst a pot head will do is eat all the cookie dough.
-
I didn't really read through this thread very good, so here it goes...Cigarettes - They're bad for your health and very addictive, but they don't really impair your physical or mental abilities... unless used excessively over a prolonged amount of time and causes cancer or cardiovascular problems.Alcohol - It can be fatal if it's used excessively enough. It's possibly addictive. It doesn't take long to impair you mentally and physically. Why isn't it legal? People have been widely drinking alcoholic beverages even before biblical times.Marijuana - It's possibly addictive. It doesn't take long to impair you mentally and physically. It has a long history of medicinal use. Why is it illegal? Alcohol is probably worse for you than marijuana, but it just doesn't have the same reputation.I mean think about it. Biblical texts mentions alcohol as a blessing. Eastern texts mentions marijuana, but it's kind of as if it were in passing.

From personal experience, I know people who binge drink three four times a week. Apart from their marks dropping, and a severe lack of funds, their life has changed very little. In fact, they're often happier than most.
I know a couple of guys who smoke a ridiculous amount of pot, one guy told me he smoked at least a gram a day, often smoking 2 or 3. This is Australian pot too. I'm no expert, but I remember some American telling me that there are two main types of pot, and Australia rarely gets the crappy kind, whereas America is often loaded with it. Basically this guy is fucked. I can't even hold a conversation with him. He has no memory, and does nothing all day, but deal enough pot to get by. He claims he can't sleep unless high either.
In my mind, pot is worse. If it were as freely avaliable as alcohol I could see many more people ending up like my mate. If your an occasional user, alcohol is worse, but at least alcohol forces you to recover.
Also, I remember watching a doco on TV which claimed that because Westerners have drank alcohol for thousands of years our bodies have adapted and can handle it. Whereas you might notice many Asians who drink have a bad reaction and go bright red in the face.
They also said that native Americans rarely succumb to illnesses due to smoking, because they too have smoked for thousands of years. Yet us westerns who've only start smoking in the last hundred years can't handle it as well.Dunno if its true or not, but it was interesting all the same.

The difference between your buddies who binge drink four times a week and the guy you know that smokes pot is addiction. Your buddies who drink aren't alcoholics. Your buddy that smokes pot is addicted to it. You most likely already realize this already, but comparing the two is like apples and oranges.
-
I think someone who binge drinks four times a week is almost certainly an alcoholic.
-
If they were addicted, wouldn't they be drinking everyday?
