Alcoholics often try not to drink all the time. For many, the craving is weak enough that they can overcome it with willpower, until they start drinking.

Why is it illegal?
-
You're probably right.Quote:their marks dropping, and a severe lack of funds, their life has changed very little. In fact, they're often happier than most. My main point is this description doesn't point to alcoholism.

-MJ is not legal in Canada. Simple possetion has been decriminalised. Here, criminal and noncriminal offences are the same as felloney and mistemenor in the US (pardon my spelling)So, you get busted with a couple joints here, you don't get a criminal record, but you do get a fine. Growing, distributing, importing, selling etc is still criminal. This actually makes a bit of sense.-MJ vs alcohol. both have their serious problems because both impare the human mind. Consider this though... who ever had a social toke just for the flavor with no intention of causing imparement?-Alcoholism is (or was) defined by the WHO not so much as being about frequency or quantity but it's affect on your regular life. Basically, if you drink when you know you shouldn't and it messes up your career, health or relationships, that is alcoholism

Quote:If they were addicted, wouldn't they be drinking everyday? I don't think so. My boyfriends drinking has ruined our lives. For example, he has not drank since Friday (which is a long time for him). He was nice and did things around the house, acted like the father he should be and then went out last night.....he never came home. And I'm sure he won't make it into work today. This happens at least once a week. I talked to an AA guy once who said you don't have to drink everyday to be an alcoholic. Alcoholic = The inability to have control of your life. (or something like that) I would assume the same thing applies to pot. So, I guess it depends on if you have an addictive personality.

raises hand Alcoholic here. Never been a pothead, but I got carried away with alcohol. I used it for pain control, both physical and emotional. When the rough stuff in my life let up, I had created my OWN rough stuff to deal with because of alcohol. I will vouch for it not being something that has to happen every day to be an issue.

That sounds like my friend's husband. He'll go for days without a drink and be the perfect husband/friend/whatever. But then he'll break when the urge hits, or a 'friend' drops by with a beer after work and he'll start on his benge. It's not one or two beers, it's more like 10 or 11 and then my friend is forced to live in hell. She wants more than anything to get out, but she loves him and right now she has no where else to go. He's ruined their lives because he can't crawl out of a bottle. They've lost two houses, numerous cars, and many other things along the way because he'd rather drink than work.
I also have a friend who is a huge pot head. She used to smoke befored she came to school, before work, everywhere and all the time and it eventually lead to doing ice and other things. I spent many sleepless nights wondering if she'd make it home, if she'd come to school that day, if she was even alive because pot led her down a very destructive road. It was just the gaitway to harder drugs. So now she spends her days watching her little boy, getting high in a trailer outside her mother's house, her boyfriend beats on her when he comes home drunk, and she has no job. And she wonders why I've distanced myself... I can't fix something she's not willing to give up. What a life.

a gram?you do realize that a gram is the same as about 2 paper clips right?if everyone smoked a gram this world would be a happy place!at one time I smoked nearly a fucking ounce a day.Now I smoke on rare occasions, less than oncea month, sometimes not for months at a time.Pot is nearly harmelss, and impossible to overdose on where as we have a few thousand people die of alchy poisoning each year, and millions worldwide that die from liver desease brougth on by booze, and all the other good shit that goes along with drinking, add in drunk driving...Id rather smoke a joint and stay at home laughing like alittle girl at the red green show and red dwarf, or a cheech and chong movie. If you do go out, smoke a joint, an hour later or two your sober and can drive home, a drunk is still a drunk hours later and a danger.weed has been demonized, when it was first being battled it was refered to as the the devil and they blamed the blacks for its use, and warned parents not to let thie children run around with black kids or they would get hooked on MJ.Its all a crock of shit, people really do not understand what weed does or how safe it is to use as an adult thats responsible, instead of some dumb ass kiod that smokes all day everyday.I know the difference, I was once one of those dumb ass wake and bake kids.It does make you stupid, I smoked myself retarded many times but that afect goes away when you sober up for a few days, and never sets in when your not smoking mass amounts daily.

Quote: red green show oh jeez i used to watch that show all the time, hell id sneak out of bed when i was younger to watch that i loved that keyboard/guitar like thing harold has but the repeated blows to my head have since pretty much killed my childhood so i dont remember most of it, and i have no idea if any channels we get have it so

the reason why many drugs including marijuana were banned were not for their legitimate reasons that are given now by this government. as we all know, this country from the very beggining has been a very racially divided country, and after the civil war, the radical republicans lost control of the south due to the untimely assessination of Lincoln, fricking confederates. the vise president as in many cases is kind of like the opposite of the president' platform to widen the ticket's appeal. anyways, if lincoln was alive it would have been a very different outcome. the vise president was a democrat, and a southerner, and in laymen's terms, one of the most racist presidents we had, and one in the wrong side of the team. state after state, they loss their countrol. after that, indiscrimination, and racial bias as well as slavery was legalized on the south. well, what does this have to do with illegalization of drugs? very much. and something that the government mignt not bluntly tell you. the reason why marijuana was outlawed was because those people that used it were the people that this society hated, i don't know the term they used back then, but they called the marijuana a reefer. why was cocaine was outlawed? because of some headlines that read like "crazed negro rapes white women." as in those times, cocaine was used in the south by dock workers who were the black people. and well as you know, these people saw the black men as inferior, and when they saw that cocaine made them crazed niggers, then they outbanned it in the south states for no surprised, and then the federal level. why do you think opium was banned? because of the white man's fears of chinamen. they are banned for all but the right reasons. a lesson that everyone must know about. have anyone read the "white man's burden" ? it is a poem that simply sums up all the imperialistic, racial bias, and indiscrimination that was done during a large period of time in this country, and it is still done. just like the romans, and just like the romans we fall!

a cigarette is more way more addictive to you than marijuana for the simple fact that nicotine makes you phisiologically addicted to it, meanwhile marijuana makes you simply phicologically addicted to it. has anyone died from overdoze from marijuana? all of these drugs are synthetics. this means that they are taken from their natural accuring chemical bases and are free-based chemically to make the disired effect much power. that means taking the active ingredient in the coca plant, and taking away all the "fiber" and the other chemicals that slow down the absorbtion of the chemical, and thus with the accompaning chemicals it makes a mild stimulant instead of just the active ingredient in which the absorbtion is way more intense and in indeed more addictive. these people in bolivia greatly benefit from the coca plant due to their altitude from sea level, and thus the lack of oxygen. so for them a coca break is the equivalent of us taking a coffe break. what i am trying to say is that these synthesized, free-based chemicals without their slowing, acompaning chemicals, are very little of use as medical benefits. althought cocaine is used as an anesthetic for corneal surgiries, so it has a legitimate medical use. well, the only that i know of. and this every doctor knows. and that is the way they make medicines. if you get down to where they mention the ingredients, you will see the active ingredients, and the other ingredients. why do you think they put the other ingredients? because of taste? the more free-based the ingredient is, the more intense, and the more powerful, and fast the absorbtion is. it is like sugar. if you take sugar, your body absorbs it quite rapidly, and gives you a quick energy, because chemically is more free than say, um, lactose, or whole grain. when your body digests whole grain it takes more time because the chemical base is more large but if all are reduced, they get the same: glucose. so the body takes more time to absorb it, and thus the rate of use of this fuel is more efficient because it doesn't store back as fast as sugar lasts. and this is what happening today with foods, and that is that they are taken away that "natural fiber" and made less nutriotious as a way to make more profits since enriched crops are less nutritious to pests, and have more shelf life.

and this is the root of makes a drug addictive. and that is the phisiological effect that it has on our brains. all of these drugs create a disered response in the brain, whatever it may be. and what happens is that when that message is more intense than what our synapses can handle, they lose the sensitivity, and thus a more powerful dose of that free-based chemical is needed to give the desired effect on the brain. so what i am saying that this used in long-term will make you slave of the drug. your body's chemical balance will ask you to take more of the drug in order to sustain your addiction. so what i am saying is that all drugs are bad. it is the good and the bad that makes them "medically" justifiable to be used. taking too much coffe will kill you, drinking too much water will kill you. working out more than your body can take will cause more bad things than the good benefits. we need to find that scale. and simply don't take any drugs, that is what i say, unless it is for medical use. drugs aren't intended for recreational use, i don't care how smart you think you are, you will become addicted to cocaine before you know it when you find yourself robbing your uncle's shop. anyways, your choice, your responsability.

Quote: can't even hold a conversation with him. He has no memory, and does nothing all day, but deal enough pot to get by. He claims he can't sleep unless high either. This is a description of addiction. I could care less if its a gram or an ounce. The point I was making is comparing a person that is addicted to weed to a person that drinks and isn't addicted is like comparing apples to oranges. In my opinion, alcohol is probably worse. You can die from alcohol poisoning. In fact, you can even die from alcohol withdrawal.

Was there a particular reason why you replied to me?
-
i was replying to the topic. it was a mistake in my part, lol.
-
actually, I fucked up, I meant to reply to KMRobins, he brought up the gram.but since you stated it ill have this convo with you.My only opint was that a gram is so small an amount that it has to be wrong.a gram will get me high once, thats enough to load a bowl and hit it a couple of times.an ounce is enough to stay high all day everyday for a week, from that its broken down into 1/2 oz. 1/4 oz. 1/8 oz and a dime bag or nickle bag.depending on what hes smoking size wize its really not a great amount. it wont get you off for a day if you smoke an gram. a gram by myself would get me high 2 times, since I always smoke with my love, it loads our bowl and gets us both off once.a nickle is about a joint, and a dime is enough to roll 2 small but not pinner sized jays. an 1/8th is not a great amount but would keep most people blazed for 2 days smoking it alone every hour or so to stay high.i do not belive in addiction when it comes to pot, Iv had to much experience with it and with many drugs. Most drugs you can name Ill be on the anti side, Iv fucked with em all, aside from meth. nevre touched that shit, I was over my addict days by the time meth rolled around so never tried it.MJ though ....Fuck you and I have both read tihs whole string of arguments for and against it many times on this baord and news papers and tv shows and every medium available.Im not gonna go there and drag this bitch back out agin, atleast not now, and not in teh near future I dont think. You keep your side of it Ill keep mine and iLl continue to use it her eand there and you can avoid it.funny that what sparked this was m hitting reply to the wrong post just to say that a gram isnt enough to do much for a single person, that he had to be mistaken about the amount he meant.I only brought that up so that I could get an accurate measure of how much he was smoking per day so that I had a better idea what we were talking about.Eh fuck it, I got shit to do, time to run and disapear again till next time I get time to sign in and check out the site.

Addiction is a tricky term. From what I get out of it, someone is considered addicted according to how it affects their life. If a person smokes pot (regardless of quantity) and maintains a "normal" lifestyle, then they're most likely not considered addicted. I used "normal" as a relative term.Anyway, I don't have a problem with pot. If you can do it responsibly, then go for it. I mean, it's been used to medicinal purposes for thousands of years.
-
Even a functional addict fails to maintain a "normal" lifestyle. I hate using the term "normal" because it can mean many things.
-
I'm going by a psychology book. Haha. Are you saying personal experience is the only experience that really matters?

its embaressing to say that i think im one of those
