He/she took it too far because he defaced school property. You don't go to school to vandalize something you disagree with. It is the state motto. I believe he/she said it was hung by the state flag. It's not like they hung it next to a cross or a picture of Jesus. I think the actual bill is stupid, but I think every person should be able to identify thier own state flag and such. And just so everyone knows, Ohio is not the only state that has a motto mentioning God.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_mottosBoth my kids go to public schools and this is not in thier classroom. And if it were, I wouldn't care either way. They still make you say The Pledge of Allegiance every morning.

Ohio's rules getting out of hand for schools!
-
Because I think its great.I don't think the poster is there to force children to believe in god.. I think its more so there to inform.
-
So what if 86% of americans claim to be christian. It doesnt matter. Religion should be something you do on your own time. Dont incorporate into everyone elses lives. I know that no one is forcing them to read it, and they always have the option to glance away from it, but instead of singling out this "god" character, why not incorporate all the other ones like buddah and wahtnot? Im not saying change the mottos and whatever, but have some way of displaying all the world religions. If youre going to have one, then have them all.
-
Well we got our teachers permission to put the S's after the God part. Otherwise everything else was on another piece of paper and on the board...that and he took down the other paper later in the day. Dx
*Edit: That and this poster is full color and high quality glossy printing paper. Thousands of dollars went into that when some schools need that money for fixing the school. That and getting air conditioning in some rooms..or windows...bah my schools layout is messed up.

Quote:The state General Assembly this week passed a bill that would require public schools to post donated copies of the U.S. or Ohio mottoes, each of which contain the word 'God.' House Bill 184 requires the phrases to be framed or printed, 8.5x11 inches, free of any image other than the motto words and the American or Ohio flag, and not paid for at taxpayer expense. Please read the quote. The fact that you had your teachers permission makes it even worse.

Okay I get it, We did get out of hand. I still don't find it right though, having posters like that.. Donated or not.

Separation of Church and State. I understand that the time I was out of America, it turned into a raging hypocritical theocracy, but I still believe in our constitution, and I don't give a fuck if every American seems keen on just throwing it out the window, it's still our constitution, and God DOES NOT belong ANYWHERE near a federal building, PERIOD. This country was built on people from EVERYWHERE who believe in EVERYTHING. And you know those numbers are so ridiculous, because people say they are Christian, but something fewer then 4/10 of Christians go to church. Sure, they MIGHT be 83% of the population, but only 40% of that 80% goes to church. And it is affected peoples lives if they have kids, so now they see that motto EVERY DAY in school? It's just as stupid when they used to for kids to say the pledge of allegiance.
-
So many of those state mottos seem rather silly - overblown, or weird.
-
So It's okay because it's not at tax payers expense? YAY!
-
wow. no comments is my only comment lol. that's nothing unusual. matter of fact I'd love to have that in my school. it'd encourage me at least. but "oh heavens no! we don't want to offend the Muslims, Buddhists, evolutionists, scientologists, etc". personally I don't care anymore. I have to deal with that crap all the time what else is new? so what now your personal feelings have been hurt and the whole world has to tend to your needs? ha. funny. everyone must be on crack and everyone has issues . they just need to get over themselves. stop being such a big baby and suck it up. be a man and get on with your lives.
-
You're from New York, yes?
So, what would be at your school would be "Excelsior (Ever Upward)"
Personally, I don't see how *that* would encourage your beliefs. If you believe in a Religion, Strongly enough (and, if you actually claim to take part in Organized religion, because those are ALWAYS the people that want this crap) Then you wouldn't NEED Some ridiculous motto in the class to make you feel better. I agree, People do need to just get over themselves and stop using God(s) to separate people, and that is EXACTLY what this is. Now in his class, either you hate that motto, or you're one of the ones that want it there. That is dividing people over religion more. That is why Nothing To Do with RELIGION belongs Anywhere NEAR a federal Building.
-
hoo buddy. how did I know? um... like I said I don't care about it anymore. it's not like they give you anything optimistic in school anymore. you go, you learn, you leave. that's the schedule. vandalism is worshipped there meaning people can say whateverrr they want. and if a teacher who just happens to be a Christian tries to encourage his student (like me) by giving me a Bible verse to calm me from stressing out over finals gets suspended for "forcing his beliefs down my throat" then he got what he deserves. sigh... people these days and their drama. there are plenty of posters with the development of monkey to man on the walls, and of Buddhist statues and all that crap but you don't see me complaining. like I said before, get over it. not you Java lol the other dude. I'm not as hostile towards other religions as I used to be since I had to do that research paper on Buddhism and Shinto from Japan. it's a nice story and I guess I kind of understand why people would believe in that. but the gods sound so...heartless and unloving. or maybe I'm just spoiled? k I'm done.
-
My Niece is actually Buddhist, she always complains about the common misnomer that a lot of Buddhists believe it's a Philosophy, and not a religion. That's her biggest beef with people bringing Buddhism into this debate.
-
people always confuse alot of things so that always leads to disagreement
-
If your comparing things nowadays, to school in the fifties, There was 80% More Racism them, then There is now. I mean... Come On! And Religion has *nothing* to do with Moral Fiber or anything like that, the thought that it does is a marketing slogan brought to you by Pat Robertson. People make up Morality, Not religion. Also, If I remember right, there wasn't any mention of god In the first few versions of the pledge of allegiance, and most schools were segregated enough in every way, to where the Jews pretty much went to Jewish schools. Now, With everyone being equal you have to accommodate everyone's needs. Tolerance, is a wonderful thing.

Quote: That is dividing people over religion more. HOW is that dividing people over religion more. Its not like its saying.. "BECOME A CHRISTIAN"Its not directing it towards ONE god. I think that if we can be diversified among race. Whats the problem with being diversified with religion. The thing that gets me angry is that at christmas time, we can't even say "Merry Christmas" anymore. Or have christmas trees out in stores. Its not like if someone said to me "Happy Hanukkah" Id be offended. Id smile and say thanks. To each their own I guess
-
dies laughing are you serious about the merry Christmas this? I've never heard someone say happy holidays, i mean, i say merry Christmas out of habit! It divides more, because you have all the agnostics and Atheists going "OMGWTFHAX!1!!!!!1! THEY SAID GOD!!!" and you have the Christians going "It's our right to have that!" (which it is) So the easiest way, is to just put anything that has to do with religion out the door when it comes to federal buildings, Hence, SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.
-
Janeists, Secularists, Atheism, Freethought, Ignosticism, Naturalism, Taoists, Buddhists, to name a few.I dunno, The world would be easier if everyone was Baha'i.http://www.beliefnet.com/index/index_10041.html

I always find American arguements about seperation of church and state kinda funny, in an ironic sort of way. We've never tried seperating church and state in the UK and have three official state churches, yet our officially secular neighbour has to try and stop young girls from hopping over here for abortions. Our politicians until just the last decade had to swear allegiance to God apon entering parliament, yet I cant remember ever hearing a British politician from any of the three mainstream parties louding his religious beliefs in my lifetime. "God and my Right" is the official state motto, yet most people have never heard of it. We have Civil Unions between homosexuals, abortions aplenty, sex education class's, and all that excitingly secular stuff. And I went to a catholic school!Ya know the only place that IS officially secular in the UK is Northern Ireland, and yet thats the bit with the religious violence. Seperations of Church and State is a load of bollax. Seperation of Church and People is the thing to go for!
-
That's cause America's fucked ten ways to Tuesday and being anywhere NEAR advanced on social issues. In Israel you don't hear ANYTHING about religion hardly, and thats a damn near Theocracy.
