I'm pretty sure that fasting and then eating a lot isn't good for you. He's better off eating smaller amounts 4 times a day. And also, try to tell him to slow down when eating and try to actually appreciate and taste the food. When someone eats slower their brain tends to become more satisfied and then he'll feel full faster and from less food. This can't be done by trying it one day. He'll feel like eating a lot when he sits down to eat, but if you keep trying to make him eat 3 times a day, I'm sure he'll take in less and even out his intake.
Also, keep his self-esteem up by being positive. Negativity leads to bad things. I used to be overweight and when someone was negative it put me down pretty easily, I just didn't try to show it. Let him know he's appreciated and cared about.
If he was serious about the suicide thing, he may need some professional help. I'm not an expert or anything, but I'd try the home methods first before seeking professional help.

your friend should be eating 3 square meals a day consisting of a good source of protein, some fat and carbs. he should also have 2-3 healthy snacks to eat in between meals. He needs to eat healthy meals before he gets hungry so he doesn't feel the need to eat like 7 pieces of pizza and then starve himself.

I think there is a technical term but it sounds like an addiction to food. Many ppl have it because it is one of our primitive instincts, to eat and store fat. It's hard to fight.
Eat much slower for the brain only realizes your 'full' about 20 minutes after your really 'full', so eating slower gives your brain a better chance of telling you your full.
Also don't consume as many starchy foods such as doughnuts or muffins. They are jam-packed with energy. Fruits and vegetables are damn good. I personally recommend he seek a regimented Atkins Diet plan and that you and his family give the guy a lot of support.
I hope this helps.
