What's the difference between them?I've been looking into architecture and both college and university offer them. College is cheaper though. What schools do I have to go for architecture? College, college or art, architecture school or university?I know Yale and Harvard have it.

College vs. University
-
I would think college is a place for all sorts of majors and degrees. When you enter a university you're usually there for a specific degree, or that school excels in a particular area. Harvard Law School is a university, Yale, and since I'm in Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic a.k.a. Virginia Tech is an engineering university. College, hell, you can do many other things, business, liberal arts studies, etc.
-
That would be different in different places, I suspect. Generally to practice as an architect the program needs to be accredited by the local professional architects' organisation, so that's the place to ask first, I think. Most professional bodies are happy to give that sort of advice. In Canada there's the Canadian Architectural Certification Board and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. There are also provincial organisations - see here.

Harvard Law School is not a university; it is a college within Harvard University. The general distinction in the U.S. between a college and university is that a college is one school that generally has multiple majors and departments, but which does not offer graduate programs. A university is a larger school, offering graduate programs, and containing more than one college within itself. For example: Harvard Law school is one college within Harvard University; Harvard medical school is one college within Harvard University. etc. Sorry if that's not too articulate, but I believe it is the correct definition.

Quote:Harvard Law School is not a university; it is a college within Harvard University.Semantics.
-
It's not semantics. It's a technical distinction. Harvard is a university. The medical school is not in itself a university. It is one constituent component of Harvard University.
-
That's what I meant when I said Harvard Law School. That Harvard was a university, whereas something like Texas State community college is not. That's what I was getting at. My fault.

Try conestoga.
-
The term "college" originally just meant a gathering together of people, and it is still used that way in a few senses, such as the US presidential Electoral College. Its use for some kind of educational institution varies a lot in different countries, and is often used more than one way even in the same country.

University is definately the best choice. As with anything else, with education you get what you pay for.
-
What's the difference though?Besides costs.
-
Better pricier universities may be able to afford higher caliber professors.
-
It's not where you go, it's where you finish.Edit: And weren't you banned?
-
Just one point I'd add here. In the case where one knows for certain what field he/she wants to go into: then the reputation of a particular school for that particular field can be important. Whether a university or college- there are surely certain schools which are considered exceptional in the field of architecture for example. I'm not saying it's essential, but if one has a choice, then choosing a school that is considered exceptional in a particular field can be helpful to a career.

this is my plans... right now i'm going to a jr college. i'm not really sure wut i want to major in.. somthing art tho. but when i figure it out and grt my creit classes (like Math,PE,history types... urggg high school shit all over agin grrrrrrr) but anywasy i can tranfur them over to a univerity and focus more on my major (when ever i choose it lol)
-
What are you going for college right now? You should transfer to University; yea, it will be high school over again but I heard the job people hire more university people- +1 Uni..----Sdp - Does it matter who the professors are? They don't go on the diploma do they? I'd rather go to a prestigious school then.---I know, Thoughtful, but there are Architectual colleges and universities. Offer the same things, basically but I don't know the difference!

right now i'm a general art major. i can't make my mind up to if i want to stay general art or graphics........ my dad's been on my back about how a general art degree is crap. He'd way better like to see me in some business major but i'm not that smart. i will go to a University in probly another year. i want to get all the hard classes out of the way. Quote:Does it matter who the professors are? i dk how true this is but i have been told that (community /jr)colleges are easer than universities. that's why i'm getting all that i can at a community college and transferring to a uni.
