I've noticed the same thing with myself in the past 2 years. These forums are actually partially responsible. Steve helped me to open my mind and really think. I miss him. I also had a teacher that was so serious and dedicated that I really began to grow up. She really got me thinking (and I still am thinking).

what kind of things are you usually thinking about???

Were your teachers teaching with the Socratic method? If you ever have a conversation with someone who does that...Good googly moogly you'll think more than you think.
-
Very few people even know what the Socratic method is anymore, much less employ. That's sad and frustrating. Cause if (according to the socratic method) you wanna say "if A=B and B=C, then A=C" the person you're arguing with these days might very well say "That might be true for you, but to assert that it's true for me is very narrow-minded and oppressive. Why...it's hate speech!"Things like the law of non-contradiction have little place in the world anymore.

That's Aristotelean rather than Socratic. Socrates asked difficult questions seeking general rules, and he would then open out the answer, and show a problem in it, forcing the other person to think more deeply, and often more widely, to come up with a better answer, which Socrates would again find holes in. This would continue until an answer that reasonably held water was found. It's no wonder he was unpopular with some people.

You are indeed right. Thanks for the correction. They were both bad asses in my opinion.

Socrates sounds like my kinda guy

He would have been made fun of and crucified on a daily basis if he were alive today.Peter Kreeft wrote a cool book back in the day called "Socrates Meets Jesus".

He would have been made fun of and crucified on a daily basis if he were alive today.Wow, doesn't that sound familiar (on a much smaller degree).I still wouldn't mind meeting this Socrates guy.

Using the negative question, positive answer rhetoric. It's interesting, he knew the answer and through question form got you to agree with him. I think if more people used his methods instead of giving the correct answer all the time, we might be doing a few things differently today; especially in politics (as he was "training" future leaders). There's a reason his methods and he have been around for 1500+ years.
