I think my family is going to be moving to a house that has some woods and a farmed field behind it. Pretty sure that there are coyotes, and deer- but I'm not concerned about them in the woods. I'm concerned because I have kids and I was hoping to get a dog. There is no fence, but I would love to put one up, just not sure how soon that will happen. What are you thoughts on coyotes... please and thanks.

Coyotes

LOL! I live with them around me. I hear them at night all the time, and actually think it is pretty cool.Yotes are cool. They are really timid, and you usually wont see one unless it is running for cover. (unless it is sick). As for the dog, bring him in at night and it will be fine. A bitch in heat can bring in the coyotes, but not usually. As far as it goes, no worries. I have 2 dogs, and there are a BUNCH of cats here, and the coyotes don't bother any of them, and I don't have a fenced yard. Just half a mile from the "real road". What gets the kitties here is the BIGGER kitties, like bobcats.

I've lived all my life around coyotes, growing up on a chicken ranch and still live a few miles from where I grew up.Cats are at a big risk as are smaller dogs. How old are your kids? Very small kids could be at risk although an attack by a coyote is very rare even though it has happened.

My kids are 9, 5, and 3, then there is the one on the way.

I'm glad this is the most dangerous wild-life I have to contend with at MY back doorhttp://www.dse.vic.gov.au/dse/nrenpa.nsf/FID/-5C7EC89239367C7BCA256D900008A996?OpenDocument#ring

I live way off in the sticks and we've got all kinds of critters here (coyotes being one of them). I highly doubt you'll have any problems with coyotes, but it's better to be safe than sorry! Make sure small pets are brought in at night and I'd be careful about allowing your little ones outside during the hours coyotes like to roam around.

Naturally no small kids should be left alone, but the attacks I have referenced have occured in urban areas where coyotes have constant exposure to humans and thus lost their fear of humans.
For the most part you and your kids should be safe. Pets, no unless it's a larger dog. They are out mostly from dusk till dawn. -
Thanks for the input all. I am still a little nervous, but I will just have to live with it and hope that it isn't as bad as I could imagine and I hope they are as timid when the sun is out and stay away.
