I was just wondering what books you were required to read during your school days, and if any of them had any sort of impact on you and why...The Diary of Anne Frank - - Wonderful piece of historyA Midsummer Nights Dream - - loved it and the movie too!To Kill a Mockingbird - - One of my all time favorite booksThe Lord of the Flies Fahrenheit 451 - - This book had a huge impact on my lifeGrapes of Wrath The CrucibleThe Scarlet LetterThe Adventures of Huckleberry FinnThe Hatchet - - loved this bookThe OdysseyRomeo & JulietThe West Side Story - - I actually had to read that as well as watch the movie for Band lolFahrenheit 451 is one of my all time favorite books. I consider myself lucky to have been able to read it because it taught me to love literature and the importance of it. Of course, this book isn't for everyone, we all have different tastes, but I highly recommend any of you who haven't read it to at least try it out.It was published in 1953 and written by Ray Bradbury; it's a bit of a science fiction. Imagine a world where books were forbidden and thoughts were repressed. You couldn't be caught with any type of literature in your homes or fire fighters, better known as book burners, would come and burn your house to the ground for going against the government. 451 degrees Fahrenheit is stated as "the temperature at which book-paper catches fire, and burns...". (451 °F equals 233 °C)It had an impact on me because it showed me what 'our' futures would be like if we solely relied on technology. I know many young adults, whom I spent countless hours with while in school, who've never cracked open a book because they'd rather read the summary online because it was 'easier.' It showed me how much our society today could be repressed by the use of technology. Now I'm not saying that all technology is bad, it can be a marvelous thing, but I believe we rely on it too much. Hell, I know many people who'd rather turn their brains to mush in front of the boob tube than go outside and join the living just because they want their quick fix of entertainment. But anyways, I'm starting to ramble.

Books that you were required to read in school!

Dantes Inferno, the only one I really remember that was required reading. Pretty sad, I know I read most of the books on your list.ANYWAY, Katie, as I sit here gabbing at all of you, I fight this battle at home as well. I don't watch much TV, or many movies. Somehow, the story doesn't interest me much. I also hate it when I am talking to someone and all they have to talk about is what happened in this show, or that movie, and who sings best. Grrr...It has happened in EVERY relationship I have had, and here it is all over again with my man's kid.Ok, so I am the meanest "mommy" in the whole world according to him. He spent all day yesterday, without even a glimpse of TV.He didn't die, but he thought he would..lol Yet, he wouldn't do his homework until his dad got home, so it was his choice! On school nights, if everyone is done with homework, and their chores, I let the TV go on for shower rotation. Which usually means 1-1.5 hrs then it is lights out. Now, with 3 kids again, it means, MAX 1 hr of TV each.It is a wonderful thing when you throw a kid in water and watch their imagination take off, and they forget about the "real world" but it is even better to see them forget that the Simpsons is on in the other room.

HA, you obviously have not seen the movie 300.... gorgeous men, teeny-tiny clothes....drool.

Hmm you are really making me think lolOf mice and Men Diary of Anne FrankRomeo and JulietThe lord of FliesFrom the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler Free Flowers for AlgernonFantastic Voyage Sadly this is all I can remember, though I know there were many more. Most of the time though we were allowed to choose our own books and than we had to write reports and weekendly journal entries about the chapters we read. Some of those were:The Cries of the ChildrenHear the Children CryingExiles: Ruins of AmbriHalf way down Patty LaneSupport your local Wizard

I can't really remember what they made us read in school except for The Red Badge of Courage....great book. Great Expectations (I think that's what it's called)....another great book. Better than I thought it would be at that time. And another one about a girl who got into an accident and lost her leg, Izzy Willy something.....tear jerker.

ROTF. What no hot strippers around there?
See, what ever there is that is worth looking at in that box, I can go see for real..lol Besides, Helms knows the beach to see no clothes..hehe
Not really, I am not anti television/movies, I just always have enough real life happening that shows just aren't so important.
The other night, I stood outside for 2 minutes worth of seeing the Space Shuttle, and Space Station go right over my house. To me, that was cool...the kids, were glued to the TV.
But on the positive side, beyond that, I had a bit of alone time with my man. No kids squawking...yummy yummy kisses..lol

Here are the books that I read in school before college:The Giver --- One of the most beautiful, yet, disturbing books ever. The Catcher in the Rye --- A true classic.Julius Caesar --- Good, but I'm not a Shakespeare fan.A Tale of Two Cities --- Boring at first but gets better towards the end.The Odyssey --- I always loved Greek mythology.Farewell to Manzanar --- A good read. The Outsiders --- Pretty entertaining book and movie. The Great Gatsby --- I hated this one. Don't get why it's considered such a great novel.Fahrenheit 451 --- Didn't read the book but saw the movie. Similar to The Giver. The Crucible --- Crazy ass, twisted book. And the movie's not half bad.The Scarlet Letter --- Another great book. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (?) --- Can't remember if it was this book or the Tom Sawyer one. Either way, can't remember much of it because I didn't finish it.Pride and Prejudice --- Didn't finish this one either. Booooring.Out of all of them, The Catcher in the Rye is the book that really got to me. Since I was a teenager at the time, I felt like I could somewhat relate to the main character Holden. Plus, the way he viewed the world and the idea of being a "catcher" was genius. It was almost as this character was in real because his views on how ugly and twisted the adult world was something real to me.Ugh, I can't put the words together to describe this book. It's just best for everyone to give this book a shot.

I'm currently reading Fahrenheit 451 for my school. So far, I think it's amazing, but I've only gotten past the first couple of pages. Ray Bradbury is an amazing author. I've read his other works, and learned how to write better from him.

It's about a 12-year-old boy name Jonas who lives in a world that is completely controled and artificial. Everyone lives in the same house, do the same routines, and the world has no color. He becomes the "Receiver of Memory" and goes to "the Giver" to receive memories and knowledge before the world was overcome with "sameness".
Here's the wiki page to give you a refresher. I too couldn't put it down when I read it. It was such a great book.

Ah! It was the book I've been thinking about these last few days! I loved it too! I've been racking my brain for days trying to think what the title was lol
-
Has anyone read the companion volume and then the sequel to The Giver? I liked the companion volume, but in my opinion, the sequel was pretty bad.
Lord of the Flies- I HATED IT!!!!
Animal Farm- Really didn't like this one very much either.
To Kill A Mockingbird- I liked it, a lot
The Rats of Nymh (in grade school)- LOVE that book, it's awesome!
Journey to Joburg- It was okay
Night- Books about Nazi Germany aren't my favorite...
The Scarlet Letter- The ending SUCKED, and it was kind of stilted, but I thought it was pretty good.Usually, though, I try to read all of our school stuff before we actually go through it in class, because I've found that reading in class makes me bored with the book.
