And they say we are moving forward.
Why am I not surprised?
This is why the educational system has gone to hell.
I'm skipping the point completely here, but that was a horribly written article. Its all "He said, then she said, and he said and she said..."
Nor did it say clearly why the handbook was offensive. The writer seemed too nervous to mention even that the men on the cover were black. You had to look at the picture to get a proper understanding of the tone of it.
i was thinking the same thing, and i really dont see why any of this is a big deal..wow he published a book, lets suspend him!
i have to agree here..
I mean honestly there is a time and place for everything. I would never even contemplate talking to a cop the way I do my friends (and i don't even speak ebonics).
So in all honesty I personally feel the parents shouldn't feel offended.. They should feel ashamed the cops need a handbook just to understand their gutter mouthed kids... I personally think I'd need to have a long talk with my kid if he was speaking to cops in ebonics.
if i had a kid, id beat the crap out of him for speaking ebonics, to a cop or not its just pointless..well, i wouldnt realy beat the crap out of him, but there would probably be a bit of yelling and time with hooked on phonics.
I honestly don't care who speaks what so long as its in the proper time and place.I remember hearing at one school teachers were told to accept answers in ebonics.... I find that just wrong. When I am at home I like to try to speak german with my brother at random. When I see a certain girl I know I speak spanish with her because we are both amused by alternative languages. But, in the classroom and to anyone who doesn't speak german, or spanish I do my best to speak as properly as I can in english.Granted I have the disadvantage of it being my native language XD.
i dont consider ebonics a language, its pointless babble. i wouldnt care if my kids were speaking spanish and stuff, as long as they didnt speak it to me because i dont really understand a word of it:P
Very good point.I think what I mean to say is that we all have certain mannerisms that we SHOULD use to specific audiences.I wouldn't hesitate to walk up to a friend "sup mother ****er"I won't hesitate to do taht to my brother either. But, if it comes to someone I work with. its "yes sir" or "no sir" usually. We all have specific mannerisms depending on who we are talking to is really my point.. and that as long as we remember its audience specific we are fine. Its when we lose sight of what audience we are talking to and use the wrong speech that it becomes an issue.*Edit I am curious waht the OP thinks o teh way this convo developoed.......
im sorry..but i really hate how people can butcher the english language that badly, it annoys the hell out of me no matter who its being said to..makes me wanna break out the golf clubs and beat their voice boxes in. the occasional "sup" is fine, i do that too sometimes, but everything else is just like..stfu already.. i dont understand why anyone talks like that, but if anyone has a real reason feel free to share.
That's so stupid. If people want to speak that way then LET THEM speak that way. It's not that serious. And if you truly have a problem with it then get over it. It's not like it's the end of the world.
and when I speak to my friends I don't entirely speak in ebonics but then again I'm not like "oh no my dear child, it is not at all like that. you must understand that I do indeed like chocolate on my delightful banana float." get real.
it is the end of the world if my kids were to do it :P i wont live with that shit. im not saying other people cant do it, i just dont want to hear it. its so fucking annoying
my children wouldn't be speaking ebonics to begin with. my mom doesn't let us so why would I. but I'd rather have them speak ebonics than curse. there shall be no cursing in my house. Shoo, I said d@mn around my mother not even too her but I was on the phone and she practically beat the blackness of me. never again. I've learned my lesson.
wow...well yeah i wont be cursing around my kids and if they do start il be pissed..but cursing doesnt bother me that much, i do it but not around my parents..they dont really care, i just dont out of respect, so il be expecting my kids to do the same for me.
If it were just a guide to the meaning of ebonics words there should be no problem with it. Police need to know such things.
However, the cover artwork suggests an attitude problem - an attitude of contempt towards some members of the community the police are supposed to be serving. I think that's the issue. However, the article is far from clear.

I agree with you Ineligible. I remember in grade school they sent home a list of words and phrases that could be gang related. It certainly did not come with pictures of black people holding up money and guns. In fact, it didn't have pictures at all. It was just meant to be helpful and informative.
as she said, i dont think anyone was saying we must crack down on anyone who speaks in any slangish sort of fashion, just that theres a time and place for it, and speaking to people of authority be it cop or teacher or employer, is not the generally the place, teachers should not have to accept slang or ebonics as answers thats just ludicrous, if i were a teacher i would throw out any paper where all the answers were some form of slang or that annoying as fuckdom "text speak" or mark wrong any answer like that
liek omg my bff jill totallys agrees! In all seriousness maybe I just haven't been exposed to enough ebonics to harbor a hate for it.However, if you think about it this very well could mean the difference between life and death for a cop. If they have no idea what the kids are saying. As to the "attitude" behind it.. Please. There was a black guy on Cspan talking about how the only solution to the worlds problems is the elminitation of the white man. If it were a white guy on stage the poor bastard would be hounded for the rest of his natural born life. Double standard much? Oh yeah. This black guy talking on cspan is a teacher at a schoolPeople seem to take a "just ignore him he will go away" attitude.. yet, well.. remember what happened when we ignored hitler >.<
