I know there are some folks from San Diego and California in general. Anyone been forced to evacuate? We're in Central SD so it hasn't hit us yet, but when they're using Qualcomm Stadium as an evacuation site, that's scary.

So Cal Burning
-
I think Helms has already evacuated by the look of his pics.

I live in Los Angeles, so no worries over here. Fires are kinda rare, from where I live I mean. The latest one was in Griffith Park, but that was a while back and they're now trying to restore the land that was burnt. But fires are scary and hope you San Diego people are alright. I was suprised that these fires sprung so fast over the weekend.
-
I knew about SDP, that's the first person that came to mind. I hope you stay safe, and your friends and family too.Virtual, hope you stay safe as well. These fires got much worse overnight.
-
I was gone all week, was crazy to come home to this on the news. I thought about all of you down there. Hopefully the fire is put out soon... Last nights news didn't look so encouraging though.Keep safe everyone.

We have had fires like that up here too, we are just not so heavily populated. Wind just comes in and pushes a fire down over a whole town.
We just had a small fire in my back yard so to speak, about 4 lots over, scary stuff. I was glad that it was one of the calm days, with the terrain out here hand crews couldn't have handled it. And having had a fire in my house I am a bit sensitive to it.
I don't know if I would be a leaver or a fighter at this place, but I would be getting the heck out down south, because everything is so close. Defensible space isn't really an option in most places there.
I have also watched sage burn, and that stuff can throw flames like crazy. 2 foot bushes will throw flames 20 feet in the air. Flying embers and all that, I would be boogying!
-
oh wow i didnt even hear about all this, i hope you're all ok!
-
Holy Crap! I didn't even know anything was on fire. I've been traveling since last Tuesday and had no idea. I can't imagine being in fire storm like that. We often have hundreds of thousands of acres burn in wildfires here but it's just grass... All I can say is my thoughts are with you all.
-
Hey all. I'm fine. I live in the north county. No fires east of us so we have no smoke, just blue skies becasue the wind is blowing west/southwest. But 10 miles to the south of us all hell has broken loose. I'm at work and the sky is black a couple of mile south of us. A fire has broke out about 8-10 mile north of our house so we're in the middle. Work is pretty deserted becasue people have been evacuated overnight. My wifes cousin was evacuated at 2AM from the San Pasqual area. This one is bad. I've been here in San Diego for 40 years. This is probably the worst I've seen.

It is quiet up here, so our guys are heading out, but they weren't leaving, thinking of saving homes let alone open space, they were merely thinking of saving people then homes. When they can't get an air attack going, it just moves too fast, and the convections off of the hills, well, it's just killer...I probably just know enough to get myself hurt. It is hard to explain to folks that insurance will help you re build, but it isn't the same as what you had the first go around. sigh it never is. Even when one gets the photo's and heirlooms out, that devastation still leaves an ache for what was lost.Lots of people losing their initial dreams, and some for a second or more time around I am sure.

I'll bet most people don't realize the geography here in San Diego and the issue with the Santa Ana winds. The humidity is in the teens and lower. No rain for ages. Many many hills and canyons and the dry desert Santa Ana winds driving flames at up to 50-70 miles per hours. There's no way to stop the flames.
-
I doubt many do. Everyone thinks of the sunny paradise, not of the wind and desert. All of those beautiful days, have their price. Fire grabs that sage, and runs even with out wind, but get those steady gusts like that and it pushes it beyond comprehension. My father just went through a similar fire, with out the amount of homes threatened, the wind grounding the planes, desert brush burning, homes that haven't seen water in ages, just poof! Once a home is lit in conditions like that, they will just move to another home, because there is no stopping it once it starts. I would probably would not stay if my home was lost in such a fire.

"...people were actually stopping at red traffic lights. (idiots) causing the miles-long traffic back up."This kind of shit pisses me off. People so conditioned not to think for themselves they're gonna get everybody fucked.Sorry for the tangent rage there but Jesus!, if you can go, go! Who gives a shit what color some little light is.Anyway....
-
Hey Helms.. Have you found any "Maps" of actual burn areas? I hate the news maps. They show a stupid little flame on the maps and it really doesn't show the actual burn areas, so you have no concept of the extent of the fires.

No one directing traffic, and a non working traffic light when an evacuation has been called (the only escape route for a lot of folks, to boot). The true idiots are the ones who are supposed to be watching over us. Katrina has made us much aware that when it comes down to it, the government will pocket your money quicker than they'll send you any help.

Renters rarely carry insurance. Sad thing really, as it is fairly cheap. Cal Fire isn't showing anything. Their incident page is unavailable. They were pretty good, map and everything when one of our mountains was burning about a month ago...
-
I just wish they would publish actual ground burn areas.. That would really help. I don't understand whay they don't do that.

Actually what I'm saying is a little more than that. For us not our there, hearing California is burning is like hearing about a tornado around here. Yeah your heart goes out to those affected but more often than not, for good of for ill, it's not worth taking much note of because it's always in the news.As a matter of fact, to it's own detriment, the media has made it like a shuttle launch. Unless your at Cape Canaveral, you just read the headline "Shuttle Launched Today" and go on with your life. It's not enough to say, "southern California is burning" anymore, we hear that every year. Now you have to say "southern California is burning and this time it's serious".That may sound shitty, harsh and cold but it's reality. Most people back here only became aware of the seriousness of it at lunch time today.
