I have been doing martial arts for a few years now. It's good endurance exercise and helps keep me in shape. Recently I started taking a jujitsu class, and it's pretty rough. Since the class is on the smaller side, I'm always paired up with the bigger guys. I'm probably the smallest person in my group at 165 pounds. The other guys are anywhere from 180 to 220. While I know what I'm doing, I'm always getting my behind kicked because the people I'm fighting are way more muscular than me.So I need a workout plan to build up muscle so I can compete with these guys. I'd like to have something I can do 2-3 times a week. Also there are no gyms around me, so I need something I can do at home. And while I'm here, I could use some nutrition tips. I'll admit that I don't eat very well. I eat a good amount of snack foods and white bread and anything with a lot of carbs. Thanks in advanced

Need to build up muscle

Carbs are what give you energy, which is why its so stupid to go on carb diets, because, carbs turn into glucose and that into energy, if you dont eat the carbs you will be worn out, like, all the time. You 'want' carbs.Your best bet would be to just do simple workouts at your house. (ie. push ups, sit ups, running...)Im probably not the best person to tell you about nutrition so, I wont. Just know that you need carbs.

If you do your science, you stretch your muscles and eat alot of protein, i.e meat. As it builds your muscles for you, it is a stretch and consume thing. Carbs will build into starch and fat not muscle.

wait a spell eh?so far 2 resp[onces and not one of them is right.you take the nutritien part, I NEED to say that push ups, sit ups, all that bullshit wont build bulk. simple strength ? sure but bulk and size? no fucking way.If hes in martial arts Id bet he already can do push ups, he can do them till his arms get tired and he cant lift himself up anymore, this will build endurnace in the muscles, and some basic strength, but no size no wieght gain, none of what hes after.sit ups have been proven dangerous and stupid and ineffective. crunches are the way to go there.

So if I eat alot of meat and stretch alot Ill look like a fucking power lifter?you have got to be shitting me.you need to read the advice offered by people that know and do some reseach yourself, not be popping shit out trying to advise someone who seriously is looking to improve thier own body.

They keep me in shape and help keep my stamina up, but they don't help build much strength.

No source needed, its common knowledge. you cna google it if ya like Im not taking the time, Im in the middle of finishing my basement and painting my house and am just on a smoke break right now.go lay down and do a sit up though, feel that hurty feeling in your ass as the bones in your spine round out and it wobbles you and hurts? that should be enough information to consider stopping them and swapping for crunches. Like I said, ya want a source, google it.

This is actually a discussion I had with my sons gym coach of all people after he forced him to do them and I sent a note with him saying he would nto be doing any sit ups and then had to go to the school and have a little uhhh call it a meeting with the coach over it. He got an education, looked into it, and now none of his students do sit ups for gym class, but they do crunches.beofre they did both and he had no idea of the problems stemming from sit ups till someone called him on it and he took enough initative to look into it rather than dismiss it.I guess when some long haired guy with tattoos and motorcycle boots and a leather trench coat gets in your face and screams at you offering an ass beating it gives you reason to pause and look into if your right or wrong instead of just running straight ahead into a wall.

They're not really bad if done properly, but they are pretty dangerous especially if done incorrectly!Say 'bye' to your spine!

I've only been told that putting your hands behind your head for situps was bad, although that was about 6 years ago. I haven't really done them in a while.

How about incline sit ups done on a bench? I've been doing them for a while.

Helms to the rescue ;p
Hmm, that's interesting. In Bikram yoga a lot of postures are followed by a Savasana (lying flat on ground with controlled breathing) then a sit up with straight legs. That probably explains some of my lower back soreness as well as the soreness coming from the back of my hips (given that some of the hip flexors also attach there) afterwards. It's very mild, but definitely worth noting. I was trying to figure out what was doing that to me. Here's a link with the postures (and pics) http://www.bikrammaroochydore.com/Postures/p0015.htm
I'm not so big into the "exhaling the toxins" belief as some are, but I've really enjoyed Bikram and it's been very challenging and rewarding.
