Anyone have it? Out where we are, there isn't much. There is no DSL, no Clearwire(that is what Chance had), and no cable. To have speed, we either go with satellite, or with wireless. I was wondering if anyone had info on either. My concern, is that with wind shifts and things, our cell phones don't always work here, that is a negative for the wireless right? And I saw how crappy satellite could be with weather and other stuff.

Wireless internet.
-
I don't know much about either but I have a friend who has Satellite and he HATES it because everything is very delayed.
-
I saw that same thing at the ranch. My dial up was as fast as the boss comp. I thought though, that it might have been all the stuff she had on it, and that she had a server for her and her mothers comp...One more mark against satellite....

Wind shifts?Wind does not blow signals around. If you have poor signals it's becasue of distance or interference(hills, buildings, etc).My boss has the Verizon wireless internet card for his laptop. Says it works great, but again your location is the factor here.
-
Go with Wireless. Satellite has to go up… you guessed it: to the satellite, and then down back to Earth — and that’s a lot of travel even for an electromagnetic wave, so quite serious delays can occur, even if the bandwidth is otherwise good and there’s no congestion elsewhere on the net.Plus, satellite bandwidth isn’t much as far as I remember, wireless certainly has better.

Ok, but where we are, we have three different cell companies, only one works fairly reliably. Would that make a diff? (My cell, my mans personal cell, and the company cell, all different companies)I don't want kicked off line like I am the phone sometimes. Of course if we did wireless I would use the more reliable company...but is it different?
-
I have wireless and it kicks me off a lot. Then again I don't pay for it, it's free. It must have SOMETHING to do with the weather because I know buildings and mountains aren't moving around the city.
-
LOL, yeah, like trees just get up and "re plant" themselves...
-
You're talking about a completely different "wireless".
She's talking about a card/adapter that plugs into the PC/Laptop and is pretty much a cell phone that connects for internet use.
-
If you can get a decent connection, wireless is better on all accounts than Satellite.
-
Yep.
-
That's what I have too. A modem card that plugs into the side of my laptop.
-
I would hate to be getting kicked all the time though, especially for something I AM paying for...

And just how fast do you think radio waves move across the surface of our planet? (often bouncing off the atmosphere in the process, actually; making it a less-direct transmission than a satellite feed)The problems I've seen with satellite internet are that it seems to be swayed by cloud cover, rain, and snow (as well as minor debris) satellite signals for an internet service seem to be much more touchy than that of satellite TV (To that end, I usually only lose my Star Choice signal during heavy thunderstorms)Wireless internet runs off of cellular technology; so you're still at the mercy of whichever provider offers their services (Meaning; if you don't have a cellular signal, you aren't getting the internet) and you're also at the mercy of the environment outside. I've used wireless for a number of years, and the results are okay; but they're nothing to write home about; over-all there seems to be a higher bandwidth with cellular internet.I'd put my vote towards wireless internet for the cost factor, and higher bandwidth (If available)
-
But you have the service for free?
-
Yes, I pick up available signals that are unlocked (accessable).
-
*Sigh*...I think you are very confused.

maybe Im misunderstanding what your saying, it seems that first your against it then your for it ?I have and dearly love my wireless net.Now I have the router for inside the house, all wireless aside from the computer that is on the same desk as the router. the rest are wireless, but I also have wireless internet. It comes over a radio, to a dish on my roof, down the wire to my router nad then wireless through the house.its a proiduct of motorola, and I wouldnt trade it for any service.I have 10megs per second download and upload, its cheaper than cable and faster as well, 100% whoops DSL ass and dial up should not even be mentioned. Now for a speed slightly faster than cable I could have it for 30 a month. for the 10 megs its 60 a month, only 10 dollars more than cable and sooo much faster. Its not worth paying for, atleast not to me so if I had to pay Id go with the 30 dollar plan that I had for 2 years or so before my free upgrade to the 10meg. Now I dont steal it, its a gift from the net company, My fiance works for them, so we get it free since she lives with me.you should check it out at wirelessbeehive.com, the sad part is its only availible in a small area and your not in the area. I am sure however that three is another company somewhere closer to you that offers teh same service.weather has never fucked up my signal, once a tower was hit by a car and I had no net for a few days but thats the only problem I ever had with my radio internet.go to the site, instead of visiting beehive look at the other link that lets you visit the canopy page. All the tech shit you could ask for is availible, I love my net and loved it before my woman started working for them, its jsut faster and free now
-
I have checked it (beehive thing) out before, the same deal here is called ClearWire....We can't see the mountain, so were screwed. Probably gonna go with Verison wireless internet. Not cheap, but the satellite is just as expensive...
-
Yeah.. I know what he means, but he doesn't understand what we're talking about. LOL
