I hope nobody minds that I post this...I am just still so excited and feel like telling everyone I know. Yesterday I got to observe an open heart surgery. I actually got to stand (on top of 3 stackable foot stools because I am so short lol) right next to the surgeon. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen! And the surgeon was so cool. He had the radio playing and he singing along to Metallica. It was so funny. They actually stop the heart to connect the vein to make a bypass around the blockage in the artery. Then they shock the heart to restart it and I have to say, it was beautiful! Just knowing that this patient is going to feel better and live longer because of this surgeon is just such a great feeling. Ok, thanks for letting me blab about my experience.

Heart Surgery

Sounds cool. Are you a nurse?
-
No, not a nurse. Everyone I work with is a nurse though. I work in Cardiology Research. I followup with patients that have had a heart procedure like bypass surgery, stents/angioplasty. I just had an opportunity to actually go in the OR and observe.

I had a VSD surgery at four years old. My cousin performed the surgery, in Venezuela, in the seventies. Now you know, I'm a miracle child.
-
Wow Lisa that had to be an amazing experience!!
-
Is that a hole in the heart? That's incredible! I'd love to see a surgery like that, but I don't think I could do it knowing the patient was a child.
-
Ahhh, the good ol' hole in the heart.
And people wonder why I'm so distant.Yeah, since it was my cousin doing the surgery, and in third world conditions, he used a fork and a butterknife to fix me up. Joking aside - All the docs that saw me in the USA were amazed at the great job he did when I moved here in 1979.

I'm not sure how a heart surgery can be exciting and beautiful, but as long as you enjoyed it.
