I have been making home made yogurt for quite a while, and use it in anything that calls for sour cream. It is really simple. I was wondering if anyone had any real knowlege of what greek yogurt is. I have heard that is not as sour as what we normally have here in the states. Am I stuck buying some (if I can find it) to give it a shot and get my own culture going? I tried googling it already with no luck.

its different, Iv had this discussion with Julz, and Ill ask her tonight when she gets home. she used to make it at the place she worked years back. she worked at astro burger, but appollo burger, crown burger... all nearly identicle to each other. If you have never found one of them to eat at, your fucking missing out.

in my experience (you know, the unsupervised chef) Greek yougurt is the same as pressed yougurt. Basically regular yogurt with some of the liquid removed.take a sieve, line it with cheese cloth (large enough to fold back over the whole sieve when full). Place it in a bowl deep enough for a fair bit of spcae between the bottom of the sieve and bowl. Fill the lined sieve with plain yogurt, fold the excess cheese cloth over the top then weigh it down with a plate.Stick it in the fridge over night. In the morning, you should hace a bowl full of water and a sieve full of Greek style yougurt, perfect for tzatziki

Sexpert...Yummy! Mr U, I do the cheese cloth thing already. I was told, that the flavor was different though, not as sour as us westerners are used to.I DO so enjoy it though sour or not!!

ROTFLMAO! Yes..I was..Made a fresh batch today and tonight I mixed some of the thinner parts up with vanilla and made "cream" for my yummy peach cobbler...If my man would ever wake up I want dessert...lol, (the cobbler is just a side dish..hehe)

well Julz was no help, they brought it out in big fucking tubs, she mixed it into toher shit to make the sauce for gyros and shit before they opened each day but never made the actual yogurt, the greek that owned it was secretive about the actual making of the yogurt.

Well, I guess I just have to go buy some, see what it is about, and whether it is worth keeping a culture of....

I am just confusing the dickens out of you, all over the place..lolhugsThat is where I started, and the info I got didn't coincide with the info that someone else had given me. I do the "pressed" yogurt already, which, I guess, is greek yogurt, I was just told that TRUE greek yogurt was not as sour. Edit: Possibly from a different milk, or culture.

Hmm maybe i can help , i spent a lot of time in greece and i love greek yoghurt. It is pretty much normal yoghurt , i.e. with no flavours, hence why it is also called Natural Yoghurt. The greeks like it because they can turn it into anything really whether it be sweet likeStrawberry Yoghurt or savoury likeTzatzikiGreek Yoghurt is still a little tangy but i find it far more creamy that the stuff that you purchase in shops. I am guessing its all to do with the cows!!

...and some Greeks, use sheep's milk, though I highly doubt that is what is gonna be found around here.I am pretty happy with what I make. Was just trying to get it so I didn't have to add so much flavor to lose the sourness...though, the sour flavor on a big ol baked tater or as a coating for baked fish is really yummy!

New Zealand has lots of sheep...

have you ever made tzatziki that stuff is really really yummeh with almost anything savory
fine depends on the cows or sheep , its like chocolate , chocolate from australia is erm .... interesting in comparison to that in europe, its all the cows and sheeps faults
