well was driving the other day and ran out of gas (luckily close to home, apparently the gas gauge is faulty, read there was a quarter of a tank in there but). Anyways my mom came and we went and got some gas and put it in the tank but it still wouldnt start. theres no odd sound, its just acting like theres no gas. my moms afraid the fuel pump has gone bad but i was wondering if theres any little things to check?since its fuel injected that means it has an electronic pump so i checked the fuse block but i looked for the obvious "fuel pump" or an abbreviation but no go, there was however a blown fuse under "ECM B" which i replaced but still no startage, any ideas?

Car Trouble

It could be the fuel pump; you could check the fuel filter isn't blocked; there could be an airlock in the fuel line.Of course other things also give very similar symptoms, such as no spark.
-
my dad is going to walk me through checking out some things tomorrow, spark would be spark plug right? or something having to do with it?but yeah it was starting great before this, then it runs out of gas once and now it wont start, other then that i havent had any problems like that
-
I would find where the line feeds the injectors and see if you can disconnect the line and bleed the fuel line of air.
-
By "no spark" I meant any fault that would prevent the spark plugs sparking. (If none of them are sparking, that would suggest an electrical system fault rather than the spark plugs themselves.)If you really did run out of fuel, despite the reading on the fuel gauge, then air in the fuel lines is the most likely reason, and bleeding them as sdp suggested is the best thing to do.On the other hand, it may have seemed like you ran out of fuel when the real problem was something else, and this is why putting more fuel in didn't help. That something else might have been a blocked fuel line, a breakdown in the fuel pump or injection system, or an electrical fault preventing sparking at the spark plugs.
-
If the fuel guage was indeed working, it could be the fuel pump... You have to check the obvious.. Do you have sparks at the plug... do you have fuel comming to the engine.

Did it seem to you before this that the fuel guage was inaccurate? There really may be no basis at all to assume that it ran out of gas. There are numerous other possiblilties relating to the fuel system, ignition system, or other electronic problems.

OK lets look into more than a single thing.
check fuses, then look for a fuse block under the hood.
what year is it? Older fuel injected cars if ran empty had to be primed with a wire form teh battery to teh injectors, newer ones do so on auto from the fuel pump.
look into the battery connections next, and if they are drity, dump coke on them (yes coke-a-cola!) let it sit for about minutes, dump some baking soda on that and rinse with water, then rinse the entire fucking area down, thats acid, it coats shit and east it slowly, the battery tray, the inside of the engine compartment all that shit. next take a wire brush and jus shine the anodes and teh terminal ends.
pull a spark plug wire off and put a screw driver into teh end, hold it next to but not touching teh frame, have someone turn teh key for a second a few times off and on trying to start it, if its got spark youll see it betweent eh frame and the screw driver. DO NOT HOLD IT BY ANYTHING BUT THE FUCKING HANDLE!!! I had a buddy that did, from the stem, he was leaning over and it welded his fucking zipper shut on his pants and burned his dick.
next is it HEI? does it have a distributor? sometimes the gear ont eh bottom goes out, busts the shear pin and with out it the rotor doesnt turn, no turning means no spark distribution.
look into the plug wires, make sure they are all good and test resitsance with a multi meter, rX1000 works to make sure they have continuity, it doenst mean tehy are good, but it doens mean they prolly are.
pull a plug out, check the end, is it covered in oil? is it corroded? is the gap good on all of them?
the last thing Id look into is the cat.
its possible its not even out of gas, if its cold does it start but run rough? gets warm and shuts down with no sputter?
its possible the catalytic converter is plugged. if it is then its got to be changed! if its plugged it runs cold, but as it heats up it expands the shit inside and shuts off the engine from breathing.
Id bet my left nut that one of the things i said is whats fucking you. they are the most common shit I see working on cars.
sometimes its a ignition wire thats fallen over the exhaust manifold and melted through, a simple splice fixes that.
Iv built alot of engines and swap them out regularly, have a friend who does it for a living, we build race cars for the track, I see this shit all the time, aside from that cat problem, fuck emissions, we drop cats on track cars, but Iv seen that on cars many times that other people own and one car pool car i had and some that we got to fix and resell.I know some shit aside form kinky sex and Guns
if you got spark the first thing Id do is the fuel filter, and once you get it running Id dump half a bottle of auto tranny fluid in the gas tank and fill it up with one level higher octane than you normally use with a bottle of heet from any gas station. it does wonders for cleaning out the fuel system as a whole, i run half a bottle through my cars every month.

well i let my brother borrow it awhile back and he said the same thing about the gas gauge after it ran out on him, but he said he started after he didnt have to do anything specialok so if i do find the lines to the injector, how do i bleed them?its a 1993im pretty sure it has a distributor (just looked)but no it runs like a champ year round usually, i replaced the starter last year and after that i havent had a single problem starting it til nowand also on a side note, that fuse i was talking about the "ECM B" i replaced that last night and it blew after i tried to start it
-
go get a book on it preferably a chiltons and not a hanes.your problem is related to that fuse and what it powers, it sounds like a direct short.more than likely a wire has worn through insulation or shorted out on something hot that melted the insulation and its going to ground.GIve me year make and model and Ill see what I come up with tonight when I see my buddy, gotta take him some tools I borrowed last night to do some work on my truck today once hte sun warms up the driveway.
-
its a 1993 Chevrolet S-10 so what does that fuse go to and where can i find the wire that might be shot? and what can i do about it?
-
I did a quick search using google.. read this..http://www.chevroletforum.com/archive/threads/2001-tahoe---ecm-b-fuse-blowing-no-start-4226-1.html
-
ewwwwwwwwJulie had one of those, I said fuck it, and sold it rather than fix it, I fucked with it for 2 weeks after work and some one weekends. All the smae though Ill ask my friend, see if he knows what to look into.as for the wires, you need a wire diagram, the only place i can find them is in a hanes or chiltons and prefer a chiltons.
-
fucking nice work! a location and a wire color! fucking way to go google and SDP!
-
Well the link is for a tahoe, but I'm sure they use similar wiring between models.
-
wire colors may change but the idea and circuits are the same.that info is a great place to start and it includes a warning about the fuel pump, normally pumps go out all at once, sorta like auto trannys, it works then it doesnt, no warning. and a bad wire to teh pump circuit or a short inside the pump itself where its been allowed to ground out would do the smae thing.the best part is that it helps narrow down what part your trouble shooting on that fuse.
-
hey dont diss my truck i love that thingso does that mean i should just replace the fuel pump along with the wires to it or what?and im looking at the diagram and it says theres an orange wire from that fuse to the battery, and the fuel pump/oil press switch, and fuel pump relay
-
This is where you need to start figuring things out. Disconnect the connector to the fuel pump. Put a fuse in... does it blow when you try to start? If yes, then you have a problem elsewhere, most likely the wireing, not the pump.
-
you can start replacing parts and harnesses, but that gets really fucking expensive really fast. You need to trouble shoot and diagnose, then replace whats indicated by investigation instead of jsut pouring money into it.Julzs was the s-15 blazer 2 door and I hated that bastard!got it used, and it took me a week to get it to run, it nver ran worth a shit, its still in town and I know its been sold 3 fucking times and the guy that has it now I ran into at wally world, he gave up and is replacing the engie and tranny instead of fighting it, he had another one that was wrecked so had the shit to do it and just got it to put his shit into instead of selling the drive train to someone else.
-
ok so how do i figure out where the connector is?
