surviving 'kidney cancer'? Any other way to treat it except by conventional methods such as chemo or radiation? What's the remission and relapse percentage? Is this rare? Is it more common than I'm reading? I'm totally lost.

Anyone know the odds of...

I think chemo and radiation are rarely used on kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma?) (very resistant) and the most common way to treat it is nephrectomy (surgery removing certain areas, I think). I'm not sure what the remission and relapse percentage are. There are some other treatments, as well, such as Sunitinib (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunitinib)

Kidney cancer can refer to more than type of cancer, which makes it more complicated. However some survival rates are given in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renal_cell_carcinoma#Prognosis and http://cancer.emedtv.com/kidney-cancer/kidney-cancer-survival-rates-p2.html

My dad had kidney cancer last year. He got the kidney removed. Doctors generally don't like to do chemo or radiation because its not very effective in the long run since kidney cancer has a high recurrence rate. There are a number of experimental drugs being studied right now. He's currently in a year long program to test 3-4 of these drugs. In the past they have been pretty successful, though the side effects are pretty awful (cranial bleeding etc.) he's been lucky though and has only experience some high blod pressure and nausea.
