The problem is that the good cops do nothing to rein them in. The nice cops will stand idly by knowing that Barney Phiff is being a dick on a power trip and they'll even protect him if he takes it to far. It's kinda like lynchings years ago. It was by far the minority that took part in 'em or even condoned 'em but all those who quietly turned away while abuse and death took place are made culpable by their silence. To not speak against abuse of power is to condone it. It matters not that your "brothers in blue" when the majority is silent at the abuse of power by the minority, they themselves are guilty of the same abuse. The individual liberty of the individual should always be tantamount and for anyone of authority to abuse that liberty is, in reality, the greatest treason not to just this country but to humankind. Unfortunately... it's the norm the world over.

Wow, I guess I really am pretty lucky so far. I've never had problems with LAPD, but this is coming from someone who's still young.I don't know, I guess it's because of my lack of experience with police that I don't have a strong prejudice againt cops as the rest of the world. Yes, I feel like sometimes LAPD tends to go a bit far, but at the same time I feel like some people are just asking to be arrested.

That's right. By and large it's only the atypical Americans that are unlucky.

Yeah, but you don't have to have personally been pulled over or had a run in with a cop to know there are crooked cops out there. I have personally never been pulled over for 'looking suspicious', but there have been times when I needed thier help and I felt like I was treated like the criminal. The Cleveland police were under investigation not too long ago for shooting and killing a few people (including teenagers) in seperate incidents'....the charges, of course, were dropped. And lets not forget the big tough guy cops that like to beat up on thier wives/girlfriends. That just happened last year. A Cleveland cop shot and killed his girlfriend (she had 3 children I believe) and then killed himself. Way to protect and serve.

badarnit! wow Scotty you like... said everything I tried to say but failed at. Thank you.
But if that's what it's called "prejudice against cops" I guess I have that.
I was kind of about to take high offense to what kmrobins said but it's not necessary. Km, I wasn't referring to how they look at me. Most of the time I see them I'm in my school uniform not in some tiny mini skirt and a tank walking around with 3 kids (interesting you mentioned that...). And it's not like I go to school in some run down gang infested area. It's a decent school. I just mean the way the treat you when they don't even know you. They're not perfect. Nobody is perfect so why should they have any expectations? I don't think it's right that you beat up a young man for no good reason right in front of his little sister, not even bothering to take him in for questioning or custody or something. That's messed up. It's even worse if they frisk you because they're "suspicious" when it's just to FEEL YOU UP! Now THAT is jacked up.

Maybe it's different in America than it is in Australia. The way I explained is the way it is over here.
Maybe it's the gun laws? I dunno. I'd be a lot more laid back as a cop if I knew less than 0.01% of the criminals were carrying a firearm.
Edit: This is not a knock on the America/gun debate, but I do believe it would be make a difference.

On that topic, I think this article should be read: http://www.reason.com/news/show/28582.htmlVery interesting read. Part of it talks about the fact that except for murder and rape, Britain has passed the U.S. in every other major crime. It looks at the laws surrounding gun control in Britain and in the U.S.

I've read all those things before, and heard all the arguments. Most of them, that one especially, are so packed full of half truths and propaganda you never get the full story.I won't want to get into this debate again, but my personal opinion is I feel much, much safer in a country where no one has guns. People do of course, farmers, police and the very organized criminal, but the average person wouldn't even know where to start looking if they wanted a gun.
