I recently lost my cellphone, and I wanted to purchase a new one. Except I found cheaper rates of the same phone that sprint uses that verizon and other phone companies use. Can I purchase the same phone under verizon, w/o the plan? And switch that phone over to sprint? Is there a charge? Oh yea, and is Ebay, trustable? Is that even a word? Anyways how does ebay work because my sister says it can't be trusted since you can never track the person on the other side/ the money is immediately sent so you might never get the so called goods...

Transfer Cellphone Service

Often phones are locked to only work with a certain provider. Some might be sold unlocked and most can probably be hacked to unlock them.. If you use PayPal, you are supposedly safeguearded against being ripped off. Plus if yuo buy from a certified vendor you should be OK.. read heir reviews.. Lots of reviews that are predominantly positive and you should be ok.

kk thanks!!

actual phones themselves can't usually be transfered from one service to another becauser they have some locked in firmware. However, a law was passed a number of years ago that forced the service providers to make all phone numbers transferable. Basically, you own your own number.

You two are missing her question...She wants to buy a phone designated for Verizon customers but activate it with Sprint using her existing account with Sprint.
-
Ok but again the replies, even this last one, have nothing to do with her question..
-
OK... I guess the number portability discussion is a tangent to the original question which made it confusing.

the wording of the question was a little confusing so I wanted to cover the bases. One of the problems with buying a phone on it's own and getting service for it elsewhere is that the contract for the service it' self offsets the price of the phone. When you sign up for a 3 year plan and buy the phone for 50 bucks, you have to realize that phone is really worth 500-700 bucks on it's own. They recoup the cost with the ongoing sertvice fees.Like I mentioned too, often different service providers order specific equipment from the phone manufacturers. For example, the two largest providers here are Bell and Rogers. All Rogers phones come with a SIM card that is programed with the pertinet info about the device and the network. Bell's phones are programed directly. Though these are significant differences, both companies offer the same major models from the same manufactures.
