Recently I found a bump on the shaft of my penis, its not really big but it worries me what it is. Its not a STD (i'm a virgin) and I think I may have gotten it when I shaved down there, its white and it looks like its filled with pus but does not hurt when i press/poke at it. I have tried stretching it but that has not done anything to it and it seems that there is a black dot (maybe a hair?) inside of it but its under the surface. Can someone help me figure out what this is and if I should pop it or what other alternatives there are at home to do?Thanks.

Bump :(

Welcome to A2A, foobat. It sounds like it might be an ingrown hair. You can either pop it with a sterilised needle and get the hair out, or wait for it to burst naturally.

It could be an ingrown hair, but those usually appear infected. It may simply be a sebaceous gland. You have them all over your body, but since the skin on your penis is thinner than elsewhere, the glands are more noticeable. They are designed to secrete sebum, a lubricant.Just leave it alone for a while. If it becomes inflamed, apply hot compresses to open the pore and allow it to drain. But, if it's not causing any problems, leave it alone.

I know its not a sebaceous gland because there are other white spots (not bumps) that are around there and before some white puslike thing would come out of it. What is the best way to sterilize a needle? Leave it in hot water or using alcohol peroxide?THanks for the replies guys I think i might just pop this because it annoys me so much.

I hadn't thought of that, though the black dot wouldn't be typical of a sebaceous gland. How big is the bump, foobat?

I don't know what to compare it to but its like the size of the tip thats at the end of a pen (that ink comes out of). Maybe a little smaller (im comparing to one of the normal bic pens)

Oh, that does sound like a sebaceous gland, which is perfectly normal. They have white gunk in them, the sebum.
If you're sure it's infected or has a hair caught in it, you can sterilise a needle in alcohol or boiling water. -
Does it go away or does it stay there? If it goes away how long should it take (i've had it for couple months now) and is there any other risk in popping it and taking the pus out, rubbing neosporin and covering it with a band-aid?Thanks.

Sebaceous glands enlarge in puberty and often become visible on the genitalia then, and gradually shrink again in middle age.Popping an uninfected sebaceous gland does no good at all, but if it's infected it helps get the pus out. The main risk is that you might introduce new bacteria that can complicate the infection. But what you propose seems pretty safe.

Thanks for all the help your giving me :).Does it matter that I'm 18? I dunno if I should still be getting it because I've already gone through puberty.

Sebaceous glands grow at puberty but may not be noticed until later. They gradually get smaller again later, but not until much later. If it's an ingrown hair, you can get them at any age.
