It's such a pain in the ass to be depressed even when I'm happy, it's really hard not to be affected by it and it's pissing me off that this unknown force is having such a huge toll on my life and i want it to be gone, i didn't want to use medicine for it but now seeing as i'm a junior this year and not having too much fun at all i might end up taking some.it seems like the only reason I don't have confidence sometimes even though i'm naturally confident and happy go lucky is because of depression, no matter if i ignore it or completely embrace it and try to solve it.Anybody else feel this way?

you sound exactly like my friend, he is trying something knew that isn't prosaic and/or something like it, its a couple of different kinds of proteins that many people with depression lack, they have something to do with the amount of serotonin created, they don't work by storing it up and releasing it like some of the other medication he has tried that didnt really work for him. it sounds like these medications just equalize the chemicals in your body... you might think about looking into it... don't get me wrong though, I'm pretty sure other medication has helped other people.one thing i reaaaaaalllly dont recommend from my buddy's experience is smoking a lot of pot or doing any mind altering drugs like acid and such, at very least until your brain is fully developed. what happened to him was that he had a really traumatic time while very stoned and became (possibly) permanently disassociated. disassociation is where your consciousness takes a step back during a traumatic experience to save itself from being damaged. it happens to everyone when they see something traumatic or very stressful, but with him it didn't fade normally because the depression was a constant state of stress. he is still disassociated.

I know just how you feel. I've suffered from chronic depression for most of my life and I have recently fallen back into it now that I am off of my medication. The thing about medication is that, although it works, it can often become less effective over time and you have to start taking larger doses (as prescribed by your doctor). It can also have other side-effects that aren't beneficial (more than just causing suicidal tendencies in less than 1% of patients). Before you start medication, I would recommend seeing a therapist and/or a psychologist to see of cognitive therapy can work. You really don't want to take medications if they aren't necessary. You could also see about going to group sessions for depression which your therapist/psychologist might suggest or know about. You want to work on developing positive thoughts and attitudes earlier in life so that your depression doesn't begin to permanently change your thoughts to negative ones when you are older. You sound like someone who is already a positive person, but excess depression can change that, so don't let it get you down.
As for herbs, what slightly helps for me is 5-HTP, which was recommended by my doctor. Many doctors don't recommend St. John's Wort, but it is also an over-the-counter herb/vitamin you can take if you need it and it is mostly used for depression relief. I've been taking it for the past few days and I have noticed my mood starting to increase and I am becoming more productive.
What are your eating habits like? For some people, large amounts of unhealthy food can lower their mood. Try to eat healthy, balanced meals whenever possible.
How much exercise do you get? Cardio and aerobics exercise has also been shown to help with depression, not to mention that it is healthy overall.
