Are really annoying. There are good stereotypes and bad but depending what type of person you are... I just happen to be a part of what has many which are bad. How often do you guys deal with being stereotyped? I pretty much deal with it on a regular basis. Ignorance man... pure ignorance!

Stereotypes

For the 2 month period I was in Japan over the summer I got it really bad. I got death glares left and right and was generally treated like crap because I was American. Although it was mostly cause they assumed I didn't speak Japanese...I lost track of the number of times I heard people insulting me while I was, like, right next to them.

Quote: How often do you guys deal with being stereotyped? I pretty much deal with it on a regular basis. i do. with a list of stereotyped things. you have actually stereotyped me, but it wasn't bad to me. i don't mind being thought of as a "surfer dude". lol i think every one is a little stereotypical sometimes. Like you said sometimes good and others bad. Like when you see some one in jeans and boots a person might automatically think they ride horses. And stero them into a cowboy or girl. When they just may like wearing jeans and boots and have never got on a horse in their life. Or like me.. When I saw someone wear a MX logo shirt I knew they liked that sport (or at lest the extreme sports , bmx, skating, surf… ) but now since of the stars here have started caring those brands anyone buys them. I guess some people would call them posers (see I’m stereotyping) but I don’t know what they know about the logo on their shirt unless I talk to them. Witch I’m not going to do. I’ve also noticed the trend is skater shoes this year. I wonder if people wearing them that don’t do bmx or skate know the difference in the thickness of the souls (shoes bottom). I bring up the two types cuz of this.. I ride horses and dam good at it. But I’m never seen in boots (unless I’m in completion) so it’s something no one ever stereotypes me as. They are more so to put me in the “surfer” group like you did cuz I dress that way more so. Extreme sport logo shit and jeans with no knees or board short and you got to add the long blond hair. lol but if you saw me out with my girl in jeans , wallabies and a Hollister shirt, what would you stereotype me as? Cuz I wear that too. (that’s not actually a question to you but a general example type question) Back when I was like 15...16.… I went threw a dark phase and colored my hair dark and wore a lot of black. I wanted to look as ugly and as scary as I possibly could without my dad hanging me by my toes on the barn rafters. Ignorance or human nature And yea there are the bad stereotypes..people have said things about me and my gf thats not true and said it cuz of sterotypes. I see it a lot...On here a lot too. like when people start on Emos. Or so people that dress in that trends fad. Their always stereotyped as someone bad or not really bad but… well not in a positive light. Back to what I said ^ that kid being pegged as a emo having rumors started about him / her cutting and self harming and being so depressed could actually be a really happy person and fun to be around… over the one people cling to with jeans and a white tee-shirt with blue, yellow and green billabong logo designed shirt. Witch goes to the saying cant judge a book by it’s cover. But so many do it.

Hey, surfer guys are shmexi lol. No I don't mind good stereotypes. Stereotype me that I'm smart just because I have glasses (I don't wear glasses). Or that I'm fast or something. But I don't like the "you must have 3 baby daddies" or "you're unintelligent" or "you're poor" or the worse one that I got recently was that I must be a video vixen because I have a "ghetto body". What in the world does that even mean? I had to look that up just to figure out what they were talking about. Valley kids... go figure. But that's just messed up. Human nature or not... it's still ignorance. Quote:For the 2 month period I was in Japan over the summer I got it really bad. Although it was mostly cause they assumed I didn't speak Japanese...I lost track of the number of times I heard people insulting me while I was, like, right next to them.Really? They loved me in Japan. I want to go back but... I had a blast. I have never been treated so greatly in my life it was awesome. It was a huge contrast from the treatment I get in New York to what I got in Japan. They were just really interested and decent. And I understood what they were seeing. Very rarely did I hear anything negative.

is it not stereotyping them when you call them Valley kids or is it out of anger? i don;t know if what those people are saying to you is really stereotyping you tho. to me it sounds like bulling... Trying to hurt you (witch they have).Yea.. don’t know wtf video vixen is so… I dk if that;s a bullying tact or a sick way of trying to hit on you. btw..i do wear glasses lol. so that is another thing people usually don't know cuz i wear contacts. except right now cuz i'm being too lazy to put them in. And btw.. I’d LOVE some one to stereotype me as smart cuz I wear glasses. I don’t see beign told your smart (glasses or not) a bad thing. Quote: “you're poor"I’v been on the other side of that. I’ve been on pegged as the rich brat kids. They have no idea how my dad is and how he don’t like to let go of money. He don’t just hand it out like candy. I had to work my ass off cleaning horse shit to get 20 bucks. Quote: Hey, surfer guys are shmexi lol. Quote: that’s cuz I am shmexi! but surfers are not stereotyped as being very smart either. So one that believes in it may take the surfer stereotype as a negative but since I don’t believe that shit I's good to me. lol

Oh that was definitely out of anger. I was hanging out with my brother-in-law's younger brother who's about my age and some of his friends. And they came off as really nice but really they were just a bunch of prejudice little bumchocks. This one guy was like "do you dance in music videos" and I said "what?" and he repeated the question and was like "oh because you have a ghetto body and you look like a video vixen". I had no idea what the heck he was talking about but I didn't like the sound of it. And when I looked it up I was pretty much right about what it was. Stupidity. I do not have a ghetto body. Honestly.... kind of rude but whatever.I don't wear glasses but I do like being referred to as smart LOLAnd because I work and help my mom pay the bills and what not people have said hurtful things regarding that... welfare jokes and what not. It's just messed up.One of my sister's co-workers looks like a surfer from cali LOL. I even told him that because of his long hair and the burmuda shorts lol. And he even said that "that's so stereotypical". But it's not like it's a bad thing =p

Heh, would be interesting if people listed the stereotypes they typically get placed as.Mine would be;Dork - I read a lot of books and play a lot of computer games.Hoon - I drive a fast, loud car with P plates (plates all young drivers must display).

My teacher told my class about a similar experience his friend had had. She was tall and blonde and could speak Japanese. Everywhere she went, though, no one knew that she could speak it and were saying how ugly she was.And I know you may not like this, JapanFan14, but your experience may have been different because you don't look like the stereotypical white American.

Harmon Kardon and NAD seem to make good stereo types for a reasonable budget

And I am certainly fine with that. They automatically new we were Americans... well because of the shirts we had to wear but even so they seemed more fascinated than disgusted. When I went to stay with my homestay family in Yamanashi I knew for a fact I had to be like... the only black person in that city. I felt like a martian but I was still treated great... I miss Japan...

Stereptyping has its uses but it's very frustrateing when you feel you have been unfairly steryotyped. When I was quite blonde (naturally) people assumed I was a dumbass, despite me pointing out I get better grades then them. When I coloured my hair dark brown, I automatically got smarter.I had christian friends at school who steryotyped me as a slut because I didn't have a problem with sex befor marrige I've been stereotyped as a nerd because I put effort into my school work.....People can just be ignorant because it's easyer to plop someone in a catagory rather then thinking of them an individual...I don't let it bother me, I people want to think that I'm a slut or a whore despite have only slept with one guy, then they can go for it, if they want to think of me as a nerd, why not, these people arent really woth me wasteing any energy on, the people who know me better and do matter to me know better and that's all that counts.
