Hey y'all! There is an anti-virus programme on the system at home, however, it's not great and does not detect and effectively deal with all spyware/trojan/worm problems.I was just wondering if the programmes any of you A2A folks use are any good and if you could please tell me what they are. Your help is much appreciated![i]Edit: I looked into different programmes and the most popular and effective seem to be Kaspersky, Nod, BitDefender, Norton...

Antivirus Programmes

Avast! and AVG both have good reputations among the free antivirus programs that also cover malware generally. Many traditional antivirus programs do not cover spyware and other malware well, and need to be supplemented by programs like Ad-Aware or Spybot (which can be used together).
Some antivirus shields at high safety levels don't run well together, so running more than one can be fiddly. (For example, Avast! and McAfee together on high safety effectively prevent browsers from working at all.)

Do you have a broadband internet connection like Cable or DSL?If you do, then you can usually get a free Anti-Virus package from your internet provider. It's usually a top name brand like McAfee or Symantec.. They will work just fine. You won't have to worry about finding some free shareware program or renew/buy new copies every year.My ATT DSL provides a free McAfee program and it's just fine.

Well usually those things are only "90 Day Trials!!!!", but if their footing the bill, wow, nice.
I use McAfee, personally, and it works very well, haven't had a virus/spyware/malware in about a year, athough PUP's and adware get though now and then, but it's a bit heavy on system resources...but it doesn't expire for a while, I have to look into less intense ones, but still just as good...

Like I said, if you go to your member section of your internet provider, they will ususally have a link for a completely free full version of an Anti-Virus program.. I know for a fact that ATT DSL and Cox & RoadRunner Cable provide it. I'm sure other do too.If you are not sure and can't find it, post who you have and I might be able to find it for you.

I personally try to get anyone to avoid huge programs like Norton. I find that they provide a little too much protection, and at the cost of your computer's processing power and memory. I used Nod32 for years and it did me well but now I've moved onto AVG. Not really by choice though, I stole the Nod32 and the company who make it, Eset, finally figure out how the program had been hacked and fixed it in an update. But AVG is doing the job well.

SBC Global? If they did, that'd save at least $90 for a year license, we got the 3 years and 3 licenses as a special. I'm not sure our member info, but I'll have to check on that.

SBCGlobal is now ATT.. I have the same...

Damn, that's awesome. For as long as you're signed up? Wow, that's alot of monies...Woo! I'll check it out! Thanks, sdp. Always good to learn new things.

It's free as long as they want to keep it free. It's been free for years so far.

Thank you all for your advice...>>>Inelgible and sdpAVG free was installed. However, a few weeks ago, the internet (yes, broadband) connection broke (unknown reason), and when it was fixed, I turned on the computer and a viruse and a malware programme of some sort downloaded just from opening Internet explorer (afetr updating AVG). The computer barley ran. I tried running AVG free at that stage and after five hours of scanning, it detected nothing. This took a lot of time to fix, which was annoying and which is why I'm looking into something different.I have a question about compatibility (I did Google it and it didn't seem to be a problem, though on one q&a board, a guy said that running the two made his computer freeze) Would AGV and Sptware Doctor work well together?>>>LuvMyCatsAVG free was certainly free the whole time I've been using it. It wasn't that great in all cases though. It detected a fair few problems but let some big 'uns through too!>>>BobAVG free or Internet Security or the other one (I can't remember the name...grr, you know when it's on the tip of your tongue and you just can't remember?), anyways, which one of these?

I had avg, I liked it well enough but then it started missing alot of shit and I had to start manually fighting shit and fucking with the registry, now upon the advice of my techie wife, I use Avast! and I couple it with Malware bytes These two work really kick ass together, and I have no problems since swapping to the two of them. If you turn on all protections of avast, Iv even had it catch a virus while torrenting before it could take effect, it also scans email during downloads (Not web based email like hotmail or yahoo or gmail)and has yet to let me down, I ran it right after avg had finished scan and avast got shit it had missed, malware bytes picked up even more after running both avg and avast. Both of them are free for home use. They both are faster than avg as well.I will also add that your finger up your ass is just as effective as both norton and mcafee and will do less harm to your computer than either of them, even if you touch the keyboard with out wiping your finger off first.
-
I will also add that your finger up your ass is just as effective as both norton and mcafee That's probably just as much crap as the crap one would pull out of ones ass with a finger up it.

Last time I looked, Spyware Doctor wasn't an AntiVirus program so It shouldn't matter. Running 2 Anti-Virus programs at the same time would probably cause problems.
-
I forgot to mention this in my previous reply and it's too late to edit. I tried to download Spybot a good few months ago, but it wouldn't work. At that time, I had no other antimalware programmes. I just had AVG free. Then I had Spyware Doctor for a while with AVG free. Then the whole internet-shutting-down fiasco happened. I had to wipe the computer and reinstall individual programmes, but I didn't have everything backed-up including Spyware Dr. So, I never re-installed it. Maybe the two running together caused a problem?Edit: Okly-dokey then thank you!

Unlikely

Well, yeah if you take it literally. It was simply meant to display my intolerance for the fucking disruptions and bullshit that norton more than mcafee cause, not to mention that trying to remove norton is a fucking bitch, it does everything it can to stop you.I have extreme displeasure with both products and I do nto especially care for symantec either. And they are resource hogs, much more so than anyone I have tried outside of them. Now the proper thing to do with that shit covered finger when its removed from your ass is to walk in on a sleeping person and give them a little hitler mustache with it.

i was downloading stuff on my laptop and i got a trogin and it completely killed my Trend Micro AntiVirus... it cant be removed or activated. its just dead space i guess. it cant be deleted either, and i cant add a new antivirus program... ughanything i can do to fix this?

I'm really sorry, just one more question, I promise...I now have Spyware Doctor (wooo!), but as sonn as it was fully installed, I was told that it wasn't nescessary for it to run with Window's Defender simultaneously and it asked me if I'd like to turn it (Window's Defender) off. I said ok. Then, Window's defender asked me why I had turned it off, it told me I was unprotected...ect.ect. The whole purpose of this process and all my questions was to avoid future hours in front of the computer tearing my hair out trying to remove all the crap that comes in from the internet. My question: Can I have Spyware Dr and Window's Defender running together?(I seem to be online all the time - it's just because I'm at home with a stomach bug on doctor's orders.)

First kick yourself for downloading crap.First try using something like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Then try using an online scanner to at least figure out what it might be and then manually kill it (whatever it might be).. You 'll have to do some research. Here is a free online scanner: Trend Housecall
