I believe that the country has periods where it goes way too conservative, and then actually gainst some sanity for a while. For example, the Great Depression. In the 1920s, the country was way to conservative economically. No regulation of the market caused the crash. Then the country got sane for a while with FDR and the New Deal. And after WWII there were always a majority of democrats in Congress. During this time we had record high taxes for the rich with the wealth spread around a little more evenly than it is today. Of course, these were some of the most prosperous times in American history. Then the 1980s came with Reagan, and we saw lower taxes for the rich and deregulation of market. This resulted in the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer (just like what happened in the 1920s), and eventually we had another economic crisis on our hands (just like the 1920s). Now, hopefully, the country will become sane again for a while with democratic majorities in congress and democratic presidents, which will hopefully result in more prosperous times in the future when we pull out of this recession. It's always the conservatives who put us in these economic crises, and it's always the left who bears the responsibility of pulling us out.
