Whoa, whoa, whoa! Why?

One adult toy store owner summed it up like this, "we have something for everyone."

i've been to one and it was about what i expected. lots of really trashy mags, ridiculous sex toys and a little "watch a video and jack off here" area. you know, little rooms with a box of kleenex probably.i went there to buy some prizes for a bachelorette party. got some great things, but only for the humor value. i can pretty much say that not one woman at the party would have used any of them seriously.

There are all sorts. The best one and most "respectable" one is Hustler Hollywood on Sunset Blvd. It's well lit, well kept and, for a place that sells sleaze, not sleazy at all. You go in there and you can see regular men and women openly browsing and shopping. It isn't a place you go to wearing a trenchcoat.

Here in Arizona, there are quite a few adult bookstores, and most of them are large and well-lit. Most of them have really nice people working there, although one had a bunch of jerks that almost got into a fight with another customer...There are only a few that I know of that have video booths, but they don't have doors on them so you can't do anything naughty in them. There used to be one with an acutual theater but they closed that part of it down a few years ago and now it's just a store. I have noticed that at least 1/3 of the customers are female, so the "trenchcoat" stereotype can't be farther from the truth. The laws here (especially in Phoenix/Tempe where most of these stores are) don't allow a lot of the stuff you hear people talk about. I think there's an unjust expectation that these stores attract child molesters, drugs and prostitutes (they say the same thing about strip joints). Whenever a new store opens up, there's always a big outcry from the community, even when they put the store in an industrial area where nobody lives. Some people, who I would say are self-appointed morality police, sit outside these shops and take pictures of others going into the stores so they can put those pictures on the internet and say "look, this person goes to adult bookstores, this is a bad person". Of course, that didn't last long as they got in trouble with the police, but every time a new store opens up they always seem to come back.
