My boyfriend had a cold sore on his mouth yesterday and having completely not remembering the connection between genital herpes and cold sores, I let him go down on me. Now all I can think about is how I could have genital herpes. What do y'all think my chances are? It was a visible sore. God, I hate people and how is risky. Fuck my life. I'm going to have to really suck it up and find a gynecologist. How soon do y'all think things would be able to show up in a test result? I guess it wouldn't matter since he's performed oral on me before and he's had cold sores before, I think. Please help!!!!

Possible Genital Herpes, Oh God!
-
I just talked with my boyfriend and he said he had to sore last week and it was just the scar/scab...but still...I'm really going to see a doc. at the end of the week. I pray I don't have genital herpes. I can't believe I was so stupid. I remembered reading up about this, but completely forgot. I will definitely invest preventative measures now. Ughhhhhhh I hate my life!

The chances of virus transfer are significant, I believe. The better news is that there are two different strains of the herpes virus. One prefers the mouth and the other the genitals. Each can infect the other area, but the infections then tend to be milder. Most cold sores (but unfortunately not all) will therefore be the strain that prefers the mouth and only causes mild genital infection, often asymptomatic or only a single breakout. Unfortunately the incidence of mouth cold sores that are actually the genital strain is increasing. If you get infected, a breakout is most likely within seven days. However it is said to take several weeks to develop enough antibody for the antibody test, which is the most common (but not the only) test for herpes. There's an interesting comment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpes_simplex#Society_and_culture.

God, I hate my life right now. I just want to cry. :frowning: Why can't I be smart and not do stupid stuff like this. Now I may have something that I can give to someone else. No one wants nasty freakin' sores all in their crotch. Uggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
I've kissed him before and I haven't noticed any cold sore, I don't think. We had oral sex before, but I've never noticed anything like a cold sore/fever blister down there. I've had ingrown hair (which I hope wasn't genital herpes) and I've had a cold I don't know if it was related to what he had. Could he have been sick from the cold sore and I got the same strand (core sore infection)??
I tried reading through everything, but it just mskes me more depressed and worried...and I'm at work. I have to try to not look like I have a high chance of having a disgusting, contagious, non-curable STD. -
Why is my boyfriend upset with me?? I could end up having disgusting, scabby sores on my vagina and if I do have and I've given him head, were both screwed. Why is he acting like its not a big deal?? No one freakin' wants genital herpes. There's no cure!
-
Did read that paragraph I linked to, because it puts things into perspective, I think. I'm sure that cold was just a cold, and the ingrown hair was just an ingrown hair. You've got a good chance of not having got the virus - the chance of having caught it, while not zero, is by no means "high".
-
I don't know, I was reading on my phone so the whole thing popped up. It just made be feel even worse and more condemned. I just want to be healthy and now I think whatever the outcome my boyfriend will think I'm ridiculous, especially if I get a negative test result (praying I will) and want to use protection for oral from now on. Ugggghhhhhhh!!!!
-
Has he been tested?
-
No, but if I'm negative than he mosdef will have to.
-
So I got a herpes test done. I received a 5.5 in the for combination (HSV1 & 2) test. I got comments from the doctor at the top that the update was that I was negative HSV2for when the type specific test was done, and that based on the combo. test HSV 1 must be present. Then I get a new email that I tested negative for both types, but I had the antibodies. She also said it could mean a recent exposure and I should retake the test in 6 months. Now my boyfriend is really freaking out and I'm still on edge. I don't know what to do. I wish I never had any kind of sexual contact. I hate having to worry about all this kind of stuff. Sex doesn't seem worth it at all, now more than ever.
-
Is it possible that the HSV1 positive that you are getting is related to a cold sore that you yourself had earlier in life?I would dare to say that many people would test positive for HFV1.
-
Yes, HSV1 is the strain that prefers the mouth and HSV2 is the strain that prefers the genitals.
-
Its possible, but when the doctor commented on the results in the message for to type specific test she said both were negative. I'm relying on her comments because I don't quite understand how to read the results yet. I've had chicken pox before, but I don't think that's the same strand of HSV. I do think that I read somewhere that the general test for herpes I took before the type specific one, that the general ones tests for all types of the herpes virus. I need to get a copy of the results and sit down and talk with another doctor. I'm still confused. Plus, I want to get tested again later on to see if the results will be more clear, well clearly negative.
-
Chicken pox is caused by the varicella zoster virus, which is closely related to but different from HSV1 and HSV2. It is scientifically considered a herpes virus, but not in common language. I suppose it depends how wide-ranging that general test was.
-
My boyfriend got tested last week. He's postitive for type 1, but nefative for type 2. Why wasnt my test so clear cut. The general test said I had one of the strands, then the second test said I was negative for both. My doctor was terrible confusing with the comments she left online and when I asked her about it she got even more confusing.
I think I should get a hard copy of my results and take them to a doctor that can explain things better to me. All this sucks, for me. :frowning:

What's so bad about genital herpes? Does this mean you'll get any visible outbreaks on your genitalia or is it all about the possible cancer risk?I also think condoms don't protect against herpes afair.
-
Condoms only protect the skin they are covering, so they cover some herpes sores but not all of them. (It is the same for genital warts.) So they are much better than nothing, but still only partial protection.I don't know about a cancer risk. It is some strains of human papilloma virus (HPV) that can cause cancer, not HSV. HSV does seem to be more common in cervical cancer patients than a control group, and it is hypothesised that HPV + HSV is more dangerous than HPV alone, but it may just be that they tend to be spread together as they have similar infection mechanisms.
-
Do today not many people have HPV even without having gone down on somebody or had sex? Or are virgins clean?
-
You can transmit genital warts (which are HPV) just by skin contact without any penetration, so it's certainly possible to have HPV and be at least a technical virgin.
-
Well the visible sores aren't pretty and it's something ugly that other people don't want that's contagious.
