I don't mean as a primary source. But to someone who's already experiencing depression, is it possible that depressing music can intensify the situation?Lately all I've been able to listen to is dark, depressing music. (Specifically Nine Inch Nails) and I've noticed a drastic change in my personality and emotions. I find comfort and relation in the genre, but could it possibly be hurting me?Any thoughts and opinions are well appreciated.

Music as a source of depression
-
I always listened to the depresseive stuff when I was down. It made me relate to the song and let me lose myself to the sound. I've always heard parents complaining that metal songs caused their children to commit suicide. I personally never believed this. If i'm depressed I turn off the pop music and listen to the stuff that causes a feeling of emotion that expresses how I feel. And sometimes the "I hate everything" songs made me laugh and rejoice with glee that I'm not alone. Keep listening to what you want. I haven't heard actually evidence that says you shouldn't. But if you want to listen to Brittany Spears over NIN to see what it will do for your mood, go ahead. If you prefer the NIN and you don't think its going to make you kill yourself listen to it to your hearts content.

I like to listen to depressing music, because I can relate to it (sometimes) ... but is usually doesn't intensify the situation

I've heard other people say that music that fits their mood helps when they are depressed.

Yes, NiN depresses me too...
Not because its dark, just because it sucks so bad. -

ofcourse music has an impact on your mental state. i'd suggest treatment should include taking an E and finding a rave.

I tried to kill myself with KoRn playing at one point a while back (just as an example)Music is a huge part of me, I've never been a "happy" Person, But Music, Unlike friends, have always been there for me,Slipknot/kittie when i just want to scream and cry for example.Korn/stonesour when i'm just downAnd many many more Does music MAKE you depressed though?I guess it can, especially when your listening to something really sad when your already depressed

Damnit sorry ^^^^ was me

Thanks for your reply. There have been times where I've been completely happy and I'd just put something slow, depressing and sad on and my mood will swing so fast I won't know what hit me. Not always such a good thing, I suppose...

It can also go the other way...When you feel like utter shit and you throw something depressing on and realise your not the only one going through it...
