Hi everyone, I just really wanted some people’s opinions on what I should do. Basically the school 6th form, to which I attend, is running a counselling type course that we can choose to go on. I want to go because I feel that it’s something that I can partly understand, and in so doing I hope that I will be able to understand my self better. The only problem is that one of the things that we will be talked to about is self harm, and as I have been cutting for about a year, or so, I have lots of cuts and scars on my arm, some old, some new. My friends, who are also attending the course don’t know that I cut, but all of them have seen the cuts on my arm and have commented on them. I fear that if I go on this course too then they will put two and two together. I don’t want them to know. I don’t trust them and I know that if they find out the whole school will know with in a few days.To go or not to go, and if so what I say if they ask me whether I self harm or not.Thanks.p.s. sorry the message is so long. lolMors_Mortis

Counselling

Hi Mors...I didn't know that they started to do counselling courses within 6th form in the uk...The only thing I can think of is having a chat with your teacher to see what is actually going to be covered within the course, then try to devise a way with him or her so that the area is covered completely and that confidentiality is completely covered to the whole class. Thus anyone breaking that confidentiality within the course can be removed, and although "word might spread" that "fear" may prevent things being talked about... only a suggestion.I had channel 5 on last night at work and overheard something about the treatment of acne scars. I would have thought that the same treatment could be used to limit the appearance on your arms.I'm lucky really, mine are where they can not be easily seen (unless in the changing room down the swimming pool).

Thanks diver,I know that I am probably just being paranoid but I get really worried about people finding out. I know that I have trust issues. I didn’t see the program that you talk about, but I would be interested to find out more, ill have a look online. The sixth form that I go to doesn’t actually run counselling courses but they have joined up with an organisation that does. It’s not a very long course though, only one weekend.

You definently not alone in wanting to seek counselling. I go to counselling out side of school. Everytime I walk out of that room I feel great. Counselling is very good especially if you can talk to somebody you get along with. Thanks

Counseling does help, especially if you are not fit for depression medication as I am. You say your friend/s are going to be in it to, so atleast you don't have a sense of lonliness. I would most definetly do it. Sadly, when selfharming, you usually don't think about the type of effect it may have on your skin afterwards. Partially why I almost always wear long sleeves is the scars from the past.Go for it. Just because you're in counseling it doesn't necessarily mean any one has to know about the mutilation. If it persists and you do feel the need to, talk to the counselor privately, he/she has no right giving out that type of information anyway. Good luck.
