I've been wondering.. how long does it take for a smoker to get something serious? or is it all just random for example a 4-5 cig smoker a day. Just a curious thought

Smoking damages
-
the minute you put a cigarette in your mouth it's bad
-
Your better off quitting while your ahead. $5 a pack to get lung cancer? Totally not worth it.
-
yep, smoking sucks. Never understood why people do it, but then again.....this is Earth. Yeah just stop now. It will be the easiest time to b/c after like 20 years(if you are still alive) it will be very very difficult to quit.
-
It starts causing damage immediately, and there's no level that is safe. And all smoking carries a risk of lung cancer, and the more you smoke, the greater the risk. You can be lucky or unlucky, but the level of risk is up to you.

Like every one has said, the detrimental effects of tobacco are immediate and the risk to you as far as a serious complication later in life is unknown. One person might be easily predisposed to get a serious disease while another might not.Case in point, my grandfather started smoking when he was 14 and smoked every day of his life. He had asthma (don't know if he had it as a child or not) but that did not stop him. He smoked filterless cigarettes too. This was in Europe and the type of cigarette was probably more pure tobacco whan the stuff they probably put in todays cigs. Other than the asthma, he was a very healthy man and died from old age at 88. On the other hand, his wife, my grandmother died from emphysema(sp?). He never smoked in the house so it wasn't second-hand smoke. Even though he had no problem with smoking, the evidence is overwhelmingly negative as to the effect it has on your health. So, try not to even start.

What do you consider serious?
If not being able to sleep as well is serious then it starts right away.
If being increasingly grumpy is serious then it starts right away.
If bad breath is serious then it starts right away.
If wasting money on something you don't need is serious then that starts right away.
Besides, smoking is becoming more outcasted. You can't smoke here you can't smoke there.
In the hospital a security guard walks up to a man about to light a cigarette and says, "You can't smoke in the building sir." The man tries to explain to the security gaurd, "I'm sorry, my kid has been in the surgery room for a while, I really need a smoke." The security guard replies, "I'm sorry sir, you'll have to step outside if you want to smoke". The man finds an exit and sees it's raining outside. He tugs the jacket over his head, walks outside, and lights up a cigarette. Meanwhile, his son is waking up in the recovery room with no one there except nurses and screaming kids in the nearby rooms.

ok...as many people said...smoking affects you from the first cigarette...you CAN get cancer from just ONE smoke...period...i myself have been smoking since 12, and i developed a cough about 2 months after i started...not like a little throat clearing cough once ina while but a deep flem type cough that never goes away... It really is not worth starting...then again i know people that have been smoking since 10 years old...now currently aged around 19, and they have been just fine...not a cough, not even an ocasional cold

Here. I have a real life example. One weekend, I walked up this hill. I went on one of the steepest trail. Not to much of a breathing problem (Out of breath, but not coughing or anything) ... Fast forward to next weekend, the morning of my walk, I spilt a cigarette with a friend. I walked up the same hill, but took a shorter trail (but still steep).. I was coughing.. wheezy... pains here in there. So, that just goes to show one DOES affect you. So stay away from them. PERIOD.

you want a fantastic example of how smoking affects you? i used to do athletics, i could run 100 meters in just over 12 seconds at the age of 13. i started smoking at 15, and now i doubt i could run 100 meters in 20 secconds, last time i did it it was 22 seconds, but ive ALMOST given up now
the number of people i know whove died from lung cancer caused by smoking is scary. that said, not all smokers develop this. its just by chance but the amount you smoke changes this, not everybody who smokes 20 a day dies from smoking, but its more probable they will

One drag from one (american) cigarette does more damage than youll ever think.Lets start from the part that doesn't even burn, the filter.American cigarettes use a fiberglass filter, the same material used in making boat hulls and building insulation (the pink fluffy stuff that makes you itch like hell). When you take a drag on a cigarette, you get quite a bit of this material in your lungs, asophogus, mouth, etc.. I don't even need to tell you all the additives and impurities in a normal american cigarette, im pretty sure youve read about the tar, nicotine, sionide, and motor oil (makes the cig burn faster, so you smoke it quicker and are forced to buy another pack quicker).

One drag from ANY cigarette is bad for you.

true, but in europe anything outside of a cotton filter and pure tobacco is unlawful.
