I just recently had a neck, upper and lower g.i. cat scan done. The people put an IV in me and i dont know why! there was about 3" of blood going up the little tube...but if they were putting something into me, the blood wouldnt be there, and if they were taking something out of me, the blood would be all the way up..not just a few inches1 so whats the deal..did they just feel like poking me or what?!

CT Scan Question

They probably put the needle there in case they needed to give you contrast. Sometimes the CT alone may not be good enough so they inject contrast into your veins. This then shows all your blood vessels. If you didn't get really hot, then they probably didn't give you the contrast because the CT was fine without it. The reason the blood was going back up the tube was because they left the needle in place without actually injecting you with something. It's normal and nothing to worry about. Hope the results of your CT come back good!

why would they need to inject me with contrast when they already made me drink 3 bottles of barium though? i think that would have been enough. and thanks for the good wishes on the ct, but i already got the results and they arent great...i have a big mass in my lower abdominian (sp?)

There's always blood there, even if they are putting something in you. Sometimes they've needed to put people to sleep during those exams if they get too freaked out.

Ewwww, containers that look like sports bottles full of barium. That stuff is the most nasty crap I've ever had to down and at the quantity, made me want to hurl like no other. I totally feel for ya. Think of the IV as a 'just in case' poke.
