Ok I know they say you need .5g of protein, and .8g of protein if you're lifting weights or something.
But honestly, it seems to have little effect, should I go up to 1g per pound of body weight?

If you're not gaining weight its because you're not eating enough of anything. Gradually increase the portion size of all your meals till you see the scales start to go up.
