hey, I just started taking Prozac about 3 weeks ago, and I feel like I'm putting on a little weight. Can prozac do this to you? I mean I'm taking it to get over an eating disorder, but it defeats the purpose of taking it if im just going to gain weight.

Prozac

hey check this out http://consumerhealthdigest.com/prozac78.htm?source=overture&OVRAW=prozak%20and%20weight%20gain&OVKEY=prozac%20weight%20gain&OVMTC=standard
I have never heard of anyone takeing it for an eating disorder before. They may belive that depresstion is the underlying cause of it. I was on it, can't say I gained any weight from it, but didn't like it and switched to Lexapro. I've been on it for 2 years with only minor side-affects.

my only experience with SSRI Inhibitors was bad. I suffered total crash within a few days of starting both Prozac and Zoloft. My doc said it just proved that my problems weren't chemical at all.

Wish I was on some form of medication; would sure help my depression and constant panic attacks. :/

Unsupervised experiences notwithstanding, why can't you find someone (a physician with an M.D. or an appropriate nurse practitioner) who can prescribe an antidepressants (presumably an SSRI)? Some depression is chemical-based and will not be fixed by talk therapy.I once had a long talk with a neurologist who also has expertise in psychiatry, and she explained that depression has a spectrum of manifestations, and obsessive-compulsive behavior on that spectrum. SSRIs have show to be an effective treatment.I have a family member who has (and once again is) taking Paxil. It worked like a miracle. But that doesn't mean it will work so well for everyone. And it can have some side effects that you might not like.I also have a friend who's chronically depressed. She came to realize that it's something that runs in her family, and that she'd have to deal with it for the rest of her life. She functions well on an SSRI.In summary, I there's not much of a downside to trying an antidepressant. If the side effects are bad, then stop. Stay in close contact with your doctor during the trial. Keep in mind that it can take a number of weeks before you feel the effects.

SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor I agree, it has to be carefully reviewed on a case by case basis

Some useful info on SSRI's and other antidepressants can be found here: Antidpressant Drug Database

Anyone know anything about anti-anxiety meds?
-
I Googled =>anti-anxiety drugsAntianxiety DrugsThere's lots of info available on the Web.
-
Thanks. I've searched it before but found nothing remotely new - being all out of date, which is why I asked - sorry if it came out really god damn dumb. But the stuff you've found looks pretty good.
-
"sorry if it came out really...dumb"No, not at all. There's lots of info on the Web, but much of it is not good. I'd recommend consulting an MD, or even better, a psychiatrist, since he'd have the most knowledge and latest data on these types of drugs.

That site seems better than most. At least it knows that antidepressants are now often used for anxiety. There are now one or two non-SSRI antidepressants known to have useful anti-anxiety action, and a couple of other non-benzodiazepine anxiolytics.

Mrs.U has been on Zoloft for years as an anti-anxiety med. She used to suffer from extream agoraphopbia and anxiety attacs

i try keeping in close contact with the doctor who prescribed prozac to me, but we can only get a hold of her on mondays and it's extremely difficult. Prozac was good at first, but then it made me think psycotic thoughts about life, and I felt like I wanted to kill myself. I'm still in this state of mind...and even though it made my anxiety go away, I wanted to die and I constantly wanted to be alone. So I dunno what's going on with me, but it's costing my mom a lot of money and we can never get a hold of these damn doctors, so it looks like im on my own.

It appears that Prozac (and other SSRI's?) occasionally cause suicidal thoughts in non-adults (not sure about adults). If this kind of thing comes up, it is very important to discuss it with the doctor. There is no excuse for a doctor's only being available one day a week. At least another doctor should be covering for him. In any case, there has to be a way to reach him, or someone, at off-hours. If you are having a crisis, you must contact him immediately. It's just part of his job.If you ever reach the point that you are going to do something rash and can't reach a doctor, call 9-1-1. It is a medical emergency.

I'd consider this evidence, not proof. -
Hello, I gained weight years ago on prozac. Just dont give in to the sudden cravings. It causes your blood sugar level to drop, thus making you crave sugar, pizza or other fattening foods. I suggest a low carb diet if you are going on prozac. veggies and low fat meats, sugar free cheesecake. take care, Gina
