I'm 16 years old currently. My mother has high blood pressure, as recently discovered. Today, I took my resting heart rate and it was around 100. I am aware of how bad that is, but could the fact that I'm sick play a part? I'm planning to take my resting heart rate again next week, when I'm better, and compare. I've had weird complications here and there but never really linked it to anything. Sometimes I'll feel palpatrations from walking up stairs and I can only work out for a short amount of time. I'm rather weak and my heart beats rapidly for someone my age.Could this possible be high blood pressure? Perhaps anything else? Any help would be extremely appreciated.

High Blood Pressure a Possibility?

Have you ever had your blood pressure checked? You can do it for free at a lot of pharmacies.Illness can definitely make your heart rate increase. As far as I know, high blood pressure (hypertension) won't have that effect.

High blood pressure also causes flashing lights in your eyes, (a bit like fireworks) in most people, and dizziness too.Your a little young to be suffering from high blood pressure, even with a family history but its not unheard of - a check at the doctors I think would be the best bet. When your ill your body increases everything to fight the infection/illnesses and that also includes heart rate, if you are going to take your heart rate, it should be when you are fit and well again, I wouldn't worry about the numbers when your ill.Being weak and getting breathless - have you always been like this or is this something recent? The way you are feeling could also be due to low blood pressure as well as high blood pressure, tho low blood pressure isn't as common, go to the doctors and get a check up and let us know how you get on hugs

Yea you're sick right now so i wouldnt worry about it to much. When you get better i would give it a shot. Like angel said at this age its not a normal thing for high blood pressure; however anything is a possibility when it runs in the family. Ive been noticing alot lately how people are developing things at a younger and younger age. Its great that your worrying about your health at 16, at least ur not putting it off til ur 40 like most people. But if you really think that it is a problem and if it eases your mind then go see a dr, it cant hurt.

Yes, even if you don't have high blood pressure now, and even if you didn't have a family history of it, exercising and keeping your weight down will go a long way toward keeping your blood pressure low.

Thank you all for the replies.

It appears to me to have gotten more noticeable this past year or so. I was rushed to the emergency room September of 04 for an unknown type of "attack" where my heart sped up, my breath became shallow, trembling, light-headedness. I'm not sure if that relates or not. I remember the emergency room doctor wrote something including "hypertension" without discussing it with me, and that's the closest I came to that.
I went to my school nurse today and she took my resting heart rate and it was around 80 and she checked my blood pressure and it was normal. It's kind of odd to have a sudden change but I'll definitely keep checking often.
Thanks again for all the information.

Are you stressed a lot........scared etc............the episode in september sounds a little like a panic attack, tho they can show up different for different people - my mum had the same kinda thing happen and her doctor told her it was a panic attack........Glad to hear your heart rate and blood pressure seems to have settled hugs

It may have very well been a panic attack, although I'm unsure. Thanks for the advice.
