Capital Punishment
-
It's a popular theme for B movies.
-
PMing is a discussion between two people. A forum thread is a discussion among any number of people. You were just stating your opinion, you weren't answering any questions. You take pride in being anti-capital punishment when your reason is "it's better for criminals to rot in prison."
-
I wasn't even talking to you.Do you read what you write?
-
I can't help it, I'm attacted to insanity.

In reply to:
lol. too bad torture is illegal under law. I think it breaks one ofthe amendments??? Of unusual punishments....I think? lol
I was thinking that they should use them for medical testing. That way they can give back to society in payment for what they took. But this would probably go along with that whole cruel and unusual punishment as well. :frowning: Oh well.
BTW, Hello everyone, this is my first post! I probably picked the wrong subject to speak up on though. lol

Hi, welcome to the boards. Good to know you believe in justice!

it might deter crime, if capitol punishment were universal. not just in certain states. perhaps that's the problem. people can commit crimes and flee to non-expediting countries. So if the whole world used the death penalty, i think serious crimes would significantly decrease. Also if all countries expedited foreign criminals.
-
Personally, I think that the death penalty itself is a serious crime.
-
I think in some instances, prison is a lot worse. Child molestation for example. Child molestors in prison are the bottom of the barrel...they get treated the worse, probably to the point where the offender might kill themselves. Or perhaps even serial murderers, such as Dahmer, he was killed by a fellow inmate, so I think sometimes death isn't the worse that can happen.
-
The death penalty was once universal. There was still lots of crime.
Are you saying that there are people in Texas who just want to kill, but they know they'll be executed after they're caught there, so the go to Massachusetts to kill people, where they know they'll spend the rest of their lives in one of Massachusetts' horrible prisons? I don't think so.
All evidence that I'm aware of shows that the death penalty does not reduce the incidence of capital crimes. Most people who commit capital crimes are crazy and don't stop to think about the penal code before they do their killing. Capital punishment's purpose is to make society feel better. It's about vengeance.
You can argue that capital punishment is a facet of the violent American society.
Caelamondorion> I was thinking that they should use them for medical testing.
Same thing as torture. We don't do that in a civilized society. -
Didn't I just tell you about the quote feature five minutes ago? Use it, please. It's your friend.

Well, Jeff, I hope you learned something from this thread... What's that?Never ask A2A these types of questions.Anyway, thank you to those who sincerely participated.

it wouldn't make any sense to committ that kind of crime, as in you can't do it here, so do it there. Because the USA sends their criminals to the state(s) where the crime took place to be tried...We saw this last year, i think, with the John Lee Mohammed, and Lee Boyd Malvo cases. They committed crime in several states, but since Virginia has the death penalty, and Maryland doesn't, they sent them to VA to be tried - this goes along with the idea you stated, about maximum vengeance. About your evidence, that doesn't show a correlation between capitol crimes, and the death penalty as a deterrent, are you looking at text, which i believe you may be because not many US states have kept the death penalty - that shows that the majority of crimes have been committed in states where there is no death penalty? I'm just wondering, because if a person knows they can not be convicted of a crime, and sentenced to death, it would make them more willing, still possibly insane, but more willing to committ capitol crimes. Unless of the course the crime is treason, whereas the convicted can receive the death penalty, regardless of where they were.
-
In the history of the application of the death penalty in the U.S., when it was widespread and when it wasn't, I haven't seen any evidence that the death penalty affects the murder rate, or that people who would be deterred by the death penalty wouldn't also be deterred by prospect of life in prison.
There are also practical problems, like erroneous convictions, high cost, and uneven application (black men who kill white men are a lot more likely to wind up on death row than white men who kill black men).
-
In the state of FL, I have located a chart that dissproves, to an extent, your position of black males over white males, out of 366 inmates on death row, 229 are white males, unfortunately this chart also dissolves my idea that people with prior knowledge are more likely not committ the crime, because I'd say the majority are pre. med. crimes ...very sad...So it looks like this issue is unresolved, for now.
-
366 inmates on death row, 229 are white malesMaybe they're killing the black inmates faster? Seriously, Florida is a pretty weird place. The Supreme Court suspended capital punishment a while back, deeming it cruel and unusual, since it was applied so unevenly with respect to race. It's hard to figure out why they decided, not too long ago, that now it was applied evenly. You need to not just count black versus white inmates on death row; you need to compare them against first degree murder convictions in general. In a lot of the places where capital punishment is applied, it's not hard to imagine that the playing field is not quite level.I think the fact that there have been so many wrongful convictions (especially in Illinois!) tips the scales against capital punishment. For the people who don't trust the government to do anything right, why would they trust the government to get that right?

check it out.

It's kind of weird to see the list of names...usually you think of death row inmates as anonymous, grim men.
Florida is a very violent place. Lots of people have guns, and lots of people use them. When I was growing up down here there were at least two or three murders a week in the area. The typical scenario was that someone would get into an argument in a bar, go home, get their gun, go back to the bar, and shoot the other person. That happened all the time.
Now there are 11,304 murder convicts in Florida, and 2,204 in my county (Miami-Dade) alone! I was looking through the list for people I know...the list is too big. The list does mention the prisoner's race, but it would take all night to count. (I'm really impressed by all the stuff the Florida state government has on the Web.)

In reply to:Same thing as torture. We don't do that in a civilized society. I know not many people will agree with me, but I am sick of murders getting more rights than me. I follow the law. I don't hurt or kill anyone. That really is not a hard thing to do. In my opinion, once you take someone else's life, you should forfit (sp) your rights. Killing someone is wrong, not matter if you are black, white, green, purple, female, male, gay or str8.You take a life, you should lose yours. Life is a privledge. You take that away from someone else, you don't deserve yours. Not to mention, I don't want that scum on this planet. They are a waste of a life. Why should we keep them alive? Why should they get a roof over their heads and meals and all that stuff, when we have citizens who have done nothing wrong who are homeless and don't even get that. Now for those of you who say it is more expensive to put someone to death then to put them in prison for life, it isn't if you take them out back and shoot them with a gun. That is a .99 cent bullet. Problem solved. Not civilized? What is murder? Is that civilized? I don't think so. If they committed the crime, then pay the price. Simple. If the death penalty stops 1 person from commiting a crime then it has been successful. It is keeping me from doing it. So there, it works. There is nothing in this world that will work for everyone. No perfect solution. Is it cruel and unusual? So was the murder they committed. And besides, if we do it more often, then it won't be unusual anymore. lolSure, it isn't working as a deterant. I feel that is because you can't have something and apply it here and there. It MUST be universal and actually enforced. It will not work if you do it half-@ssed. Oh yeah, and lets limit the appeals. This crap about keeping them on death row for 20 years with appeal after appeal is wrong. Max of 5 appeals is more than enough. Get it over with.Ok, sorry about the long post. I figured I needed to shake the bees nest a little. Don't hate me for my opinion. -Cael-
