In reply to:Most doctors recommend that a girl have a gynecological exam before she turns 18 or within a year after her first periodDid you just Google that up? At what age do most girls get their first period? Would you be concerned enought to make a gynecologist appointment if you hadn't gotten your period by age 17?That statement is not very definitive. Do the math. 13 to 15 is before 18.Seriously, you should question, and make sure you understand, everything your doctor says. If he's too busy to talk to you, than he was too busy to see you in the first place. Do some homework ahead of time. He'll have an easier time talking to you if you know some basics.

Going to the gyno....ladies please help!

Well, the statement that you're quoting from basically says before/at age 18 OR within a year after her first period if there are problems. So, you misquoted it.Since most responses said 18, I'll go with that. thanks for the responses! I think i'd be a few years late otherwise . Plus age 13 seems young unless you're having some sort of problem, I guess.

It's your body; do as you wish. The opinion quoted was reviewed by an M.D. But understand that modern medicine is evidence-based. Doctors are not priests. When a doctor tells you to be sure to do your breast exam, he's expressing a religious point of view, not a scientific one.In reply to:ACOG is a nonprofit organization of women's health care physicians advocating highest standards of practice, continuing member education, and public awareness of women's health care issues. [According to them.]In reply to:American College of Obstetricians And Gynecologists (ACOG)Works primarily in four areas: serving as a strong advocate for quality health care for women; maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice and continuing education for its members; promoting patient education and stimulating patient understanding of and involvement in medical care; increasing awareness among its members and the public of the changing issues facing women's health care. [According to someone else.]Now, they may have research and statistics to back up their position, or they may just be trying to drive business to their member physicians, or you may just be looking for an excuse not to go to the doctor. Like I said, it's up to you.

> Sorry, Steve. It looks like you've lost this one. 18 is the standard age.
I think if you had to choose between world peace and finding that I'd made an error, you'd choose the latter. But you're not done, madame journalist. What are your sources? Why are you having so much difficulty with that simple question? If some doctor told you to get a hysterectomy, would you just do it?
How about you get past the anger nonsense and tell me what you base your opinion on, for maybe the first time ever? If your source is good, I'll be impressed and tell you you were right. It might even help the person who posed the question in the first place, if that's any concern to you. Having a hissy fit at me (better not say anything about hackles) doesn't advance the state of knowledge.

> Bottom line, the standard age to have a pelvic exam is 18.
From God's mouth to your ear? You don't need to back anything up. You're way too clever for that. OK, you've convinced me. You're not just lazy. Bottom line, you're stupid.Today show TV doctor: When should teen have first gynecologist visit? (refers to ACOG guideline)
Medem --> ACOG (the actual guideline)
Maybe we can have Neil Izenberg, MD arm wrestle Judith Reichman, MD, for the right age.

Are you're enjoying crapping up this thread? That was your sixth posting and you still haven't said anything useful. You're too lazy to type in anything constructive, but not too lazy to post snippets of nonsense, and you don't see any issue at all. Now that is stupid. In the time it took you to post that nonsense, you could have done some research. You are utterly clueless. As I told another poster, it's not nice to crap on threads with medical themes by posting gut feelings as fact. Are you at all familiar with terms like "science" and "evidence-based medicine", or do they just confuse you?

> I guess my good judgement and experience with pelvic exams isn't good enough
This is what you don't get. It's not worth a damn.Does being 20 (or whatever you age is) and female automatically confer some kind of expertise? There are varying opinions on the matter in question, but do you think your judgment trumps that of an organization of gynecologists and obstetricians? Just how inflated is your opinion of yourself?

You could have said "18 is the right age" once, and that would have pretty well covered it. We would then all know where you stand. But instead of being a good example to all of us and adding something useful regarding the topic, you just kept defending indefensible nonsense. That makes no sense.

04/16/05 04:55 PM: "The standard age is 18..."04/16/05 08:01 PM: "18 is the standard age."But that wasn't even the point! When I said "You could have said "18 is the right age once, and that would have pretty well covered it", I implied, "and then you could have just shut up"Is this whole thing a bit childish or what? I do feel like an ass for thinking I could reason with an irrational person.OK, forget about it. Your one-liners add so much to the dialog, and your opinions are beyond reproach. What was I thinking?

Well... that was a lovely argument lol Moving on now.... In reply to: Glad we could helps sis, how long have you got to go before the examination by the way To answer your question Sis, I couldn't tell you the exact day, but I do know it is in a few weeks and I'm still very nervous. But it's okay because I know I have to do this, I need to know if everything is okay down there. Plus it's better to know if something is wrong now than later on. So thanks for all the post guys ^_^
