Caution: graphic.I was on my way home from the movie theater last night. It was about 1AM and the roads were wet from an earlier rain. I see a car in the oncoming lane flash their high beams at me, I look at them, then I look back at the road in front of me and a dog trots right in front of me. I swerved slightly instead of heavily because I drive a pickup and I didn't want to lose control. Needless to say, I heard 2 pops from my passenger side tires running over the dog. I can't live not knowing whether or not I "finished the job" the first time so I went back and luckily, the dog was very much dead and I'm pretty sure it was killed instantly.I feel terrible still. I can't seem to cheer up and the image of the dog right in front of me will not get out of my head. It just stopped and cowered with the look of complete helplessness, knowing that it was going to die in a split second. I woke up and sad songs are still just flowing through my head and that image keeps popping up. I'm so depressed and I don't know what to do.Does anyone know how to get over this, other than time?

I feel terrible about last night

When my mother learnt to drive she was told not to swerve at all for a dog, because her life was worth more.

Yeah, I took that into account, which is why I actually hit the dog. I could have swerved more and missed the thing altogether but I chose myself over the dog, which is a thought that is helping me feel better.

Quote:When my mother learnt to drive she was told not to swerve at all for a dog, I was told not to swerve... and only to brake if there wasn't a car behind me.It's always hard hitting an animal and I think if I hit a dog I would be devastated.. these things happen though.. you just have to forgive yourself and move on.

I'm very sorry to hear you had to go through that. It's never a nice experience. When driving a motorcycle we are trained to hit what evers infront of us aswell. Because if you try to turn or lock your breaks then your off and your sliding down the road. In a car I can imagine its the same sort of thing, if you lock your breaks in the wet then your going to meet a lamp post or a wall somewhere.Da Hawk
