I had a cold sore about a week ago and it looks like its cleared up but i'm not a hundred percent sure. Can I give my girlfriend genital herpes if i give her Oral Sex? What if I only use my tongue and don't contact my lips w/ her vagina.

Oral Sex Question

Hmmm well dont quote me on what i say here because im not 100% sure. Cold sores are a form of herpes, however there are different types of herpes. I dont think you can transmit a normal herpes virus lkee a cold sore to the genitals in the form of genital herpes, i think they are two different viruses. But like i said im not 100% sure about that
-
Incorrect. Oral Herpes can be transferred to the genitals. As to whether it is safe at this point? I don't know.
-
so you guys aren't sure if she can get oral herpes if my cold sore looks like its gone?
-
Yea but i wasnt sure as to the type of herpes. I know you can transmit herpes from the mouth to the genitals, but if it isnt that type of herpes i dont know if you can.....does that make sense?
-
Either type of herpes can infect the genitals, either type of herpes can infect the mouth.
-
really? hmmm i didnt think that was true

You don't have to believe me, but you can't doubt the WWW:In reply to:The research teams were able to collect information about HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is normally responsible for oral/facial herpes or cold sores and HSV-2 generally causes genital herpes, although cross-infection does occur. -- A footnoted Web pageIn reply to:Cross-infection of type 1 and 2 viruses may occur from oral-genital contact. -- HealthScout

i never said i didnt believe you. in fact it was meant to be in the tone that i was shocked to hear that and that wasnt what i had thought in the first place, but thats news to me. get it?

You shouldn't necessarily take my word for it....I wouldn't. Even if you didn't believe me, I wouldn't be offended. I'm always happy to give references for the benefit of whomever might want to dig deeper.

The tricky thing about herpes is that you can cross contaminate, i.e. get oral herepes on genitals and gential herpes on your mouth. When a person has herpes, they can always shed the virus whether a sore is present or not. The likelihood of transmission when sores aren't present is debatable, but it is not nearly as likely if a sore isn't present. It all depends on what risk you're comfortbale with.
