You need to try to eat earlier in the day, be sure to get something for breakfast - it doesn't matter how small it is. A piece of fruit, or bowl of cereal maybe. Do not eat only one or two meals a day. Eat something for breakfast, lunch, and supper at least. There's no excuse to not eat at least a snack during those times, even if you're busy (the energy will help you).
Cut out fatty foods, like those fries you just ate. You seem to have a good idea of what you eat that's fattening, so cut it out. Replace it with pasta, fruits, vegetables, or healthier alternatives. Avoid fast food, you shouldn't be eating it more than twice a week.
Whatever you do, don't diet and eat less. You should increase the number of snacks you eat (I mean healthy ones, not chips and soda), and seek better alternatives for the unhealthy foods in your diet (they're all right on occasion, but not regularily). By spreading the times that you eat through out the day, your metabolism will be more active rather than just picking up at night.
Also, exercise. I want you to do 15 min. of exercise every day for the next week on top of anything you might do regularily. This needs to be constant exercise, so don't take a 5 min. break, but rather short 30-60sec breaks if necessary. Jog, swim, do pushups, situps, lift weights, do jumping jacks - whatever you want to do for those 15 min. (minimum), do it.
Best of luck, the fact that you have a resolution to lose weight is the biggest step in the process.
