The pill

You could start taking it later, or you can skip the 7 days with no pill or sugar pill and go straight onto the next three weeks.

Generally they like to have you start the first day of your period, or the first Sunday after your period starts if it's too much work for you to change the little sticker/ twist the little dial on your pack once a month. Your doctor would be the one to tell you if you can start any later in your cycle than that. Important to remember is that you cannot count on the pill for birth control the first week or so that you are on it, and if you mess up taking certain numbers of pills during certain times of your cycle you'll need back-up birth control then, too.You can forego the week of placebo pills to extend your cycle (assuming you take a simple pill cycle with just one hormone level and the placebos), but it's not fool-proof ("breakthrough bleeding" is very likely, especially if it's your first time on pills and you normally have a 28 day cycle) and you'll be hard pressed to get your doctor's sincere approval on that for your first month. But using the pill to delay periods is a common practice now, up to 90 day cycles. If your doctor is any good they can figure tis all out with you though and won't just blindly hand you a prescription.
