I have a few questions about the pill. Me and my boyfriend have been together for almost about a year and a half, and it's not for sure if we'll start having sex. But we have been talking about it a lot and when we do other stuff, it's gets really hot and passionate. So i was just wondering if we were to, when am I supposed to start taking the pill? Before we start having sex or after? Also what are the side effects of taking the pill? Also, considering i still live with my parents, can I get the pill w/out them knowing about it or my doctor finding out I've had sex, cuz my mom works at the Doctor's office I go to, and I don't want her finding out? Please help

You have to start taking the pill before you have sex, usually 7 days or one month depending on the brand. Side effects are very minimal if any...usually some morning sickness for the first few months. You can get the pill without your parents knowning if you go to your local health clinic. Always use another backup method along with the pill though, such as a condom.

The problem with going to a health clinic is that in some states physicians may be allowed to decide to disclose your medical record to your parents if you are a minor, and you can't really be sure if your clinic physician is the tattle-telling type or not. If it's really important to keep it a secret from your parents be sure to check out the clinic's privacy policies. But is it really that important that your mother not know about it? If you are an older teen, mature, and planning to use oral contraceptives along with a barrier method then wouldn't your mother, who works at a doctor's office anyway, be proud of you? Because you'll have to be honest with your primary physician that you are taking prescription birth control when it comes time for him to prescribe any new medications, anyway. And you really really should use condoms, too, because if you've only been with your boyfriend for a year and a half it's kind of hard to trust that you'll take the pill faithfully and consistently all the time, and also he'll be 100% faithful to you/ has told you every minute detail about his sexual past. It sucks to have to take all of this stuff into consideration but it's a really big deal and there can be huge costs if you don't handle every aspect about it wisely.
