Wow, this must have been the most interesting read in a while for me (its not that long maybe a paragraph or 2) They want to MOVE our Planetary orbit!!! which is SOOO shockingly compelling to me i can barely comprehend it i just...if we could do it i would be SOOOO amazed.... its called the World Jump Day... they want 600 million people on the western hemisphere to Jump all at the same time (they give the times of your area on the site) and at the certain point in time we will generate enough Gravitational force to PUSH our orbit...they believe this will make for a better homogenous climate and for the extreme tempatures in "third world" regions will be more comfortable and such. I find this Amazing... have a look for yourself http://www.worldjumpday.org/

WJD?
-
i'm pretty sure it won't work, but i registered anyway.
-
Actually you can't permanently change the earth's orbit by doing that - nor would it have the effects stated. I think it's a rather sophisticated hoax.
-
How would it "help" our planet, in regards to global warming? Our planet is exactly at the point where it needs to be, in order for our survival...Too far away, it'll get too cold. Too close, too hot. I doubt having an orbit change, however unlikely to happen by our measly jumping, will better our situation.
-
I saw this a long time ago. There's no way it could work because everyone's clocks are a little bit different from each others, so everyone would be jumping at different times.
-
> everyone's clocks are a little bit different
It would work for people who have GPS's. That leaves about 0.01% of the world's population. Then you'd need people with GPS's who are coordinated enough to junp on time. That leaves about 0.001% of the world's population.
I just yawned. Did you feel the Earth move?
-
Unforgetto> Besides the earth is round, so if every person on earth does jump indeed, and they do weigh enough to affect anything, the amount lifted off the planet will be nearly the same on each surface so nothing will happen.Muncher12> they want 600 million people on the western hemisphere to Jump all at the same timemass of people: 600,000,000 * 65 Kg = 39,000,000,000 Kgmass of the Earth: 5,972,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Kg You're right.

Everyone could jump while holding a chair.
-
From that article:In reply to:The weight for Earth...is about 1 trillion metric tons for each person living on the planet.
-
It would be a large chair. Made of a heavy wood. Mahogany.
-
I wouldn't make any difference, even if the people jumping weighed more than the earth they were jumping from. The centre of mass of the system would continue to follow the same orbit.
-
If you blew a big chunk off the Earth (actually, both chunks would move relative to a third point; the smaller chunk would move more), gravitational attraction would pull them back together so that the center of mass would continue to follow the original orbit. To have a permanent effect, the chunk would have to be accelerated to a velocity great enough that gravity won't pull it back (escape velocity). That would take a lot of energy.
-
They could put heavy weights on the heavy chairs when they jump. And everyone could put on a lot of clothes, to make themselves somewhat heavier. And drink a lot of water.
-
It's OK. It's for science.
