Constipation vs. Diarrhea

that doesnt sound healthy, 15x a day?? i suggest you goto a doctor for some help

If you're serious, then it sounds like you have a serious bowel disease. Get your ass to a doctor.

If he's in India and has acute infectious diarrhea, it might help. But if he's in the West and has chronic diarrhea, he needs to get to a doctor to find the cause. But if he's trolling, that's another story entirely.

I am wondering if anyone else has this. For about 4 months I have been getting bouts of diarrhea. At one point it was accompanied with fever. I had many stool samples taken and a colonoscopy that all came back negative. I don't have Crohn's, colitis or colon cancer. I get diarrhea where I have to go 4 or 5 times in a row and then it goes away for a couple of weeks and then I get it again. Any ideas?
-
Irritalbe Bowel Syndrome (although the fever is a mystery)? Recurrent food (or water) poisoning? Sensitivity to some food or chemical? Chronic infection in the bowels?I don't think Crohn's disease can be ruled out by a colonoscopy. Have you had any tests involving x-rays?
-
I had some exrays done to check for blockages but they came back clean. The other thing that I am starting to worry about (after doing a google search. I put in a search for unexplained bouts of diarrhea) is HIV??? I don't seem to have any other symptoms and I only had unprotected sex with one man 4 years ago who was my fiance at the time. We were both monogomous. I talked to a couple of friends about it and they think I am being silly. Now I am debating whether I should get tested. After my colonoscopy the doctor said it could be a virus (but for 4 months??) or a touch of irritable bowel.

I had some exrays done to check for blockages but they came back clean. That was a good idea. If you have a constriction in your bowel that causes constipation, the bowels will pull in water to liquify the stool in order to get it past partial blockage. I assume some contrast agent (barium, or possibly gastrograffen) for the x-ray test. Was it just an x-ray (just photos), or was it a fluoroscopic exam, where they followed the contrast agent around as it flowed through your intestines?I'm not saying that your symptoms necessarily match those of Crohn's disease, but I'm not sure that the tests they did were sufficient to rule it out. You need to ask your doctor to explain it to you.If you keep having bouts of diahrrea, and your doctor(s) can't figure out why, I'd get another opinion from a gastroenterologist. You should do some research and find a good one in your area. But irritable bowel (IBS) is a possibility.I'm not sure that something like HIV would cause periodic bouts of diahrrea, but an HIV test is simple and easy to get.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me about this. The xrays were just standard photo kind. Personally, I think that my symptoms match Crohn's Disease better than anything else. I spoke with a friend about it and he thinks that stress is causing most of the problems. He talked me into keeping a food/mood/poop journal. He is confident that it isn't HIV/AIDS. It just blew me away and made me freak out when google came up with 3 hits on it. The thing is is that the diarrhea seems to be sporatic now. I had a bout of 10 days a few months ago but since then it maybe comes every few weeks and lasts an hour or two, mostly in the middle of the night. I think I was upset because this is the first time since my colonoscopy about 3 weeks ago. Guess I will just keep an eye on it and chart things like he said.

The connection between Crohn's and stress is not clear, but it won't hurt to keep a journal.I'd be surprised if Crohn's would cause an hour of diarrhea here and there. I'd think you'd have more chronic problems. It sounds more to me like an irritable bowel (IBS), which I think has a stronger connection with stress. There are more definitive ways to diagnose Crohn's, involving swallowing barium sulfate for an upper GI test, or a barium enema for a lower GI. Both are done using fluoroscopy/x-rays, but nowadays, they'll probably use a C/T (CAT scan) machine. I assume they didn't do those things because they didn't think the symptoms matched.
-
That is true but when it was at it's worst it sounded like it and one doctor mentioned it. Do you think I am over analyzing?
-
And actually it seems like the specialist thought it was more apt to be colitis or polyps. It was neither though.
-
Having occasional diarrhea won't kill you. Give the food/mood/poop journal a whirl, and see if it points to anything. If you're still haveing problems, you need to see a specialist (a gastroenterologist). But if you do, you'll have some good data to share with the doc.Not to sound gross, but in the journal you should make a not of the poop's consistency (watery, mucusy, etc.). Also, you should not when and if you're running a fever...check it with a thermometer if you think you feel warm.

I was diagnosed with IBS 2 years ago.. There is deff. a connection between stress and diarrhea ( or stomach pain). I have my good and bad times, depends what’s going on in my life as well. Also what foods you eat as well when you have these bouts, that'll help big time. So people with IBS have issues with nuts and spicy foods. Also something they have done recently with me is do food allergy testing and found out I have an allergy to a lot of foods I eat on a daily basis. They are now thinking there is more connections with the food allergy than with the IBS, so now I'm on a desensitizing diet to help clear up the allergies and to get my system back to square one. Just something else for you to think about because food allergies are not something you have to have from birth, people develop new food allergies frequently.
