Okay I know weird topic for this board. But about a month ago I found out I have a lot of food allergies and I am now on a desensitizing diet. One of the things I'm allergic to is malts. So I cannot have vinegar, which knocks out almost all Salad dressings. I'm a HUGE salad lover and been craving a good salad but I cannot find any dressing I can eat. So I was wondering if anyone has any good salad dressing recipes that excluded vinegar.Again sorry for the weird post but I just cannot find any recipes lol. Thanks

Let us give thanks to Google (salad dressing "no vinegar") for the bountiful information it has brought us...Greek Country Salad DressingTahini Lemon Salad Dressing (you need to divide quantities by 100)tahini and pineapple juice dressingAn expired posting found in Google's cache, from www.vegsource.com/talk/sugarfree/: In reply to:In Reply to: Help--sugar free and vinegar free dressing ideas? posted by Stephaniestuff on June 27, 2003 at 3:02 am:Try fruit based dressings. You can get Only Fruit jams, to mix with fruit juices, or try veggie broth (salty) thickened and chilled.I'm a big fan of raspberry dressing, so the fruit idea came to mind.As the Greeks know, lemon juice can be substituted for vinegar. Also, vinegar tends to clash with wine.

I think Steve's google-finger pretty much covers it. The basic poit is that the vingar can be replaced with another acid like citrus juice.
-
Thanks Steve.. I tried google and didn't find anything.. just prooves you have the art of googling down! LOL..thanks again.

Hmm though those dressings actually sound very good.. I'm also allergic to black pepper (I can use white pepper as a substitute I'm sure) and Garlic.
About to throw this diet out the window LoL.
-
Allergic to garlic! D'oh! You'll have to do without or find a substitute. Are you allergic to it even if it's well-sauteed?
-
Yup. For 4-8 weeks I have to completely get ride of all these different foods. Than I get re-tested to see if I am still allergic to the foods. Here's a small example of the things I can remember off the top of my head I'm allergic too:Pecons, Walnuts, cashews, spinach, carrots, malts, brewers yeast, peas, tuna fish, Salmon(highly allergic), codfish, black pepper, garlic, buckwheat, asparagus, Pasterized cheeses (which I believe falls under malts) and there's a few others but I cannot think of them right now.

If I were you, I'd eat plenty of whatever fruits and vegetables I wasn't allergic tom and rice and pasta. And how about fish other than salmon? If you can, then you need to make sure that whoever handles the fish hasn't also handled any salmon. I'd also recommend omega 3 oil / flaxseed oil supplements and whatever vitamins and minerals you need to ensure that you're getting enough, although in general I'm not a big vitamin advocate...although I take some...I'm conflicted.
It might be a good idea to stay away from things like soy sauce.

Yeah going to the store sometime this week to get a multi-vitamin to make up for the minerals I might start lacking. I am missing pastas big time. I can have pasta but topings i cannot..like tomato sauces (has vinegar and often times garlic), cannot have alfredo either because of the aged cheese. So yeah.. not fun LoL.I think I might have found a salad dressing I can use, it's a greek dressing, so it uses Lemon juice instead of vinegar. Probem is it calls for garlic. Someone said I can probably use rosemary instead.. but not too sure about that LoL.

I am missing pastas big time. I can have pasta but topings i cannot..like tomato sauces (has vinegar and often times garlic), cannot have alfredo either because of the aged cheese. You need to make it yourself, and leave out the offending ingredients. You can let spaghetti sauce simmer on the stove for hours on a weekend day, and use it over the course of the week. You're in the unfortunate position where you're not going to have an easy time eating out, because you don't know for sure that some dish you order won't be contaminated with something you'll react to. You're really going to have to get into the cooking thing.

I agree eatting out has been VERY rough. So far I have been lucky and found some dishes I could have. I go to this small greek restaurant and they have been so awesome in making special dishes for me.
Cooking and I don't generally mix well, but I have been doing more of it lately. Usually if I have some directions to go with it I'm okay. Been finding some new recipes lately that have been pretty good. Making my own tomato sauce might be interesting LoL. Maybe I can talk the BF into doing it hehe, he's the cook in the relationship lol. -
Homemade tomato sauce is better tasting than probably any bottled sauce. Right out of college I rented a room from a guy who made home-made spaghetti sauce every week...it'd cook for hours. It was part of the rent deal. In fact, it was the best part.
-
hmmmm.. might have to see if I can find a good simple recipe for that. It would atleast help my cravings lol. I'm a huge pasta lover and haven't had any for over a week.. its a killer I tell ya! LoL

That's quite a list of allergies. If I may ask, are you seeing an allergist or a homiopath/naturiopath? I've know plenty of people who have been convinced by the latter that they had very odd allergies diagnosed by questionable procedures.
I don't want to start a debate about it (although, I've probably already stepped right in it) I'm just curious -
Actually I went to an allergist. They did the normal needle prick test on the skin. I do feel they are correct on the allergies. Ever since I have started to exclude them from my diet my stomach has felt a lot better. Not 100% better but still better. It's just hard to find things to eat. For the last week and a half for lunch I have been eatting peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and apple sause..it's getting VERY old LoL.
-
glad to hear that you have trusted science. It's ironic that you can eat peanut butter which is practically cyanide in the food allergy world.Definately research and invest in some allergy centred cook books.I may be a total 'foodie' but I have no allergies so I'm of little help (except with some technique maybe)
-
Well I appreciate the help anyways =-). I have been doing some research along with some friend sof mine looking into recipes as well. Actually rather shocked on some of the recipes, they actually sound pretty good.I am not one to generally go with the flow wth science, but my stomach has been a mess for about 2 years and no medicines seemed to work so going on this allergy free diet it atleast worth a shot.
