Just a little curious about this. I personally Have tries searching google for about the last hour. I have put several different keyword combinations. Couldn't find anything supporting the methods they use in the movie. In the movie they heat up the cocaine and what temp it melts away at indicates the potency. Since I couldn't find anything on it, and am stumped, it is really baffling me! Anyone around here enlightened in that field?

Movie Blow: Is the way they test cocaine real?

Checking melting point is a standard simple chemical test for purity of an organic substance. A pure compound usually melts sharply at a single temperature; impurities usually lower the melting point and make it occur over a temperature range. Up to a point, the more impurity, the lower the melting point and the broader the range. However, this is not quantitative - it's not possible to tell from the melting range exactly how much impurity is present. Furthermore, it is only useful for nearly-pure substances, which street cocaine is very definitely not. It seems like the sort of thing where the scriptwriter has made incorrect deductions from a very little learning.
