Starting Period?
-
Sounds like a pretty good possibility but everyones different so it can be hard to predict. Ask your mom when she got her period that is usually a good indicater of when you'll get it.
-
Though girls tend to get it a bit earlier now than in the previous generation.

Thanks to obesity...

I can't find the article now, but I read that menarche's ocurring at earlier ages is not really true, over the long term. Someone else wrote:In reply to:I studied the onset of puberty in general, and focused in part on menarche. In short, I found that the secular trend (here, secular means existing or continuing through ages or centuries - in other words, how the ages at first menstruation has changed through the centuries) was not, in fact, a modern drop in age of onset, but rather due to a 19th century rise in onset, probably due to nutritional factors. The trend was publicized by Tanner and colleagues. Many of the charts I've included come from his research. Part of the problem with Tanner's data is that he based the early estimates (i.e. the age of onset in the 1860s) on small studies done on children in less-than-ideal conditions - orphans, rural laborers, and the like. If you look at the chart giving ages in various parts of the world, you'll see that in New Guinea, the average age is much higher than elsewhere, probably due to poor nutrition. You'll also see that everywhere else, the average age is about the same, and that the populations the data is based on are "well-off" or "middle class," etc.(http://www.mum.org/menarage.htm)

Yeah that's what I heard too. Which makes sense since both my grandmothers got it at a younger age then I did. I also did read though that because the general population is growing in obesity some people are getting it earlier, because the body fat percentage that is generally required to begin menstruation in the first place is being approached at a younger and youger ages.

I got mine at 11, so that could be.
-
Well I'm 14, almost 15, and I STILL haven't gotten my period. My mom started at 11, but both my aunts started at 16. Could I possibly get mine at 16 like them? I hope that I get it soon, because I'm short and my doctor said that I won't hit my actual growth spurt until I hit puberty, and I'm only like 5' tall, barely.

It's a possiblity that your mom carried the gene and just didn't express it, but still passed it on to you. It wouldn't hurt to check with your grandmother and/or aunts on your fathers side of the family. You might take after them. Another factor is your body fat percentage. Most girls need to have on average about 17% body fat before they begin menstruating. But everybody's different. And for the record most people don't grow very much in height after they get their period, you can but it usually isn't as significant.
-
My mom didn't have any sisters, so both that aunts that I'm talking about are on my fathers side. Also, since eighth grade I (unfortunately) got to 18% body fat, so I'm definately at least that since I've gained more weight since then.
-
You probably just take after your dads side of the family. The 17% body fat thing is just a statistical average so its possible that you could reach 25% body fat and still not get your period. Some people are just late bloomers.
-
i got my period quite late compared to my friends at 14, im sure sooner or later it will come especially since your aunts etc were late
-
how do you know when your geting you period i am 12 and all my friends have had theirs
-
people get them at different times. I got mine late when I was 14. Just wait for it. You'll probably get it when you least expect. Signs though are like mood swings, and stomach pains. At least for me but might be different for you. Trust me ya DON'T want to rush it lol enjoy the freedom from the womenly curse

My friend got hers at 16, there's nothing to it I got mine 6 months ago; I was/am 13. Turning 14 this month!
