i'm 18, about 5'11", 165...right now i can bench about 230. i'd like to be able to bench around 280 or up. any tips on the most effective techniques/routines/reps at different weights/ect.. that would help me achieve my goal? i realize working other muscles with other exercises can help but i'm an amatuer when it comes to weightlifting so i don't know what those would be. i also realize it will take a lot of hard work regardless. thanks for the advice.

Increasing my bench...specific goal in mind

I guess I can rephase my question as: to be able to max out at a greater weight, should I bench more weight with less reps (IE 200 pounds five times for 3 sets) or less weight with more reps (IE 10 reps at 165 for 3 sets). I know bench isn't everything, but it's the one area I'd like to improve the most. Thanks for the advice.

Like HeImsmaN said, being on some kind of a program you can follow week in and week out with never missing workout dates is key. To Increase in bench you simply can't be afraid to go up in weight, and form is also key. It's easy to go through the motions in lifting, and doing it right is the most important. If you succeed at a good eating habit, mixed in with good weight training/program you will increase your bench in no time.

My bad HeIms I was just refering to a program. But lifting works different ways. Every body/metabalism is different no matter what your number is in this world, it's tough to determine, you must try a workout that fits YOU and only you. It's easy to throw weights around, it's the matter of good diet that puts you over the top. Atleast that's my theory.

Woo. Can only imagine how you felt after lifting that 500. Apart from being utterly wrecked of course.

Everyone has a different style of lift, and power lifting, is a completly different life that other lifters live. There are power lifters, and just lifters. For me, I'm only 19, so I'm still getting the feel of what works for me and my body. Last time I benched 315, I know it's light years away from 500. (Good for you by the way, I bet it took hard work and determination and that's always repectful.) I'm glad you found what so many people who can't even begin to think what's right, because there's so many ways and so many theorys out there. Nonetheless, lifting gives you that high, and will always be apart of my life.
