Many words that have come from other languages can use plural forms from those languages, especially scientific words:From Latin:-a (first declension) can have plural -ae (e.g. hypha, hyphae)-us (second declension masculine) can have plural -i (e.g. fungus, fungi)But not all Latin -us words are second declension:-us (third declension neuter) can have plural -era (e.g. genus, genera)-us (fourth declension) can stay the same in the plural (e.g. apparatus, apparatus)-um (second declension neuter) can have plural -a (e.g. vacuum, vacua)-is (third declension) can have plural -es (e.g. penis, penes)There are other third declension words with other endings, especially in -x, that have somewhat irregular -es plurals, for example index, indices; appendix, appendices; sphinx, sphinges-es (fifth declension) can stay the same in the plural (e.g. species, species)From Greek:-on can have plural -a (e.g. phenomenon, phenomena)From French:-eau can have plural -eaux (e.g. plateau, plateaux)From Hebrew:Hebrew words can add -im for the plural, e.g. cherub, cherubim; kibbutz, kibbutzimFrom Arabic:Arabic words may add -in or -an for the plural, e.g. Talib, TalibanHowever these plurals are being used less outside science, and usually outside science the standard English -s or -es can also be used. It seems a bit pedantic to say fora instead of forums; definitely pedantic to talk of book indices (though it is still standard to talk of mathematical indices); and no-one now says musea instead of museums. Some plurals are often mistaken for singulars: data (plural of datum), agenda (plural of agendum), phenomena (plural of phenomenon).

Hmm. Nice post!
And I think virus is in and by itself uncountable, so viri* and virii* are both very wrong --- viruses is right.
