If they weren't safe, they wouldn't be sold off the shelf in pharmacies.... provided you use them properly and don't abuse their purpose.

Used properly, they are safe. The main advantage of using an enema over a laxative is that the effects are predictable and immediate. However, the over-the-counter squeeze bottle enemas only clean out the very last portion of the bowel. So if you are seriously constipated you might need to get an actual enema bag.
