Sex, I'm hoping you're not addressing that post about going over there to me as well, because you should know as well as I do, that when I'm out of nursing school, I want to join if my recruiter will still have me. I still support the war whether I'm there or not. When you sign up for the military, you sign up KNOWING that you may indeed go to fight a war. I have a lot of plans and things for my life, and basically what it amounts to is I want to do it all. And fighting for my country is an honor to me. Yeah, I would die for this country just as so many others before me have done. And I wouldn't think twice. And I have friends over there too. Some of whom are dead and I STILL support this war, but even more important, I support our TROOPS. Like I said, I don't believe in POW's. Because apparently we aren't going to get any of our POW's back except in unidentifiable pieces.

okay awesome! lol Guys, with it being the holidays and all, I just think it's important to stop here and remind everyone that if it hadn't been for the Native Americans, those people who came on the voyage over would not have survived and no one can tell me that two completely different cultures agreed on everything and yet there they were, helping each other out (I know some people here don't celebrate Thanksgiving but some of us do). I know we all have different opinions about how things should be and how we would like them to be, but that's what makes each of us unique. So here's to your opinion and here's to mine. I think the Marine was justified based on my belief that there is no such thing as a POW (I know that's cold, hard, and callous but they aren't very friendly to us either, plus it's one less would be terrorist). But some believe he committed murder and that's THEIR opinion and they're entitled to it. Remember, the same people that died for OUR (meaning the ones who believe the Marine was justified)freedom of speech and the other rights we have also died for the people's whose opinions are different from ours. To each his own.Happy Thanksgiving!

i'm going over there so you should direct your post toward someone

That came out really bad and I was wrong to not try and elaborate on why I don't think there is such thing as a prisoner of war. And you are right, there are a lot of people who would be and probably are VERY offended my opinion.A "prisoner of war" is subjected to all kinds of pain, torture, etc. Possibly, that is what makes them a prisoner of war. However, what a lot of people don't hear about in war is all the fatalities that take place without "flies on the walls". You don't hear about all the things that the opposite does to people they find. They're "prisoners of war". And that's because they don't make it out alive to tell you about it. And all someone's family gets is a bag with a body in it and no answers, just someone telling them they died serving their country. What they don't tell them is that they were a "prisoner of war". Maybe that's all the explaination people should get because maybe they can't handle the real truth but I don't think so. If one side is going to capture and take "POW's" and just going kill them later by chopping their heads off, or sending the prisoner home body part by body part, I have no problem playing by the same rules and not playing nice. That's why I don't believe in prisoner's of war. The protagonist is EXPECTED to be nice and play by the rules while the antagonist may be making their own rules. And sometimes you just gotta play by the antagonists rules. A "prisoner" (to an opposing side) is nothing more than a man or woman on death row. A bargaining tool. If things don't go their way, that prisoner is as good as dead. Please believe me when I say no one wants our men and women of the armed forces home more than I do and I would love for nothing more than for each and everyone of my friends and even some of my family to come home in ONE, single, solitary piece. But I know better. And I want them to do whatever it takes to survive and at least try to come home to us.

I realize that I’m a little late to this party… I don’t agree with you, Cenfath (although I understand where you're coming from). Part of our mission in Iraq is to convince Iraqis of the virtues of democratization, liberalization, and the rule of law. Lowering ourselves to the level of our enemies guarantees our failure by tainting the way of life that we seek to promote. We cannot find justification for our own behavior in the actions of those that we morally condemn. On a personal level, I sympathize with this soldier. I also have friends in Iraq that I worry about as well. Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to tell who the enemy is in situations such as these--our soldiers have an extremely difficult job. However, their innocence or guilt must be determined by the UCMJ according to existing legal conventions, not by protests of the public. We are a nation of laws, and this is the vision that we bring to Iraq; this is our alternative to theocracy and totalitarianism. How can we promote values that we discard whenever it’s convenient? I don’t have enough facts to judge this soldier as either guilty or innocent (and he may turn out innocent), but I would never sign a petition urging our military to ignore its own laws. This soldier knew or should have known the legal conventions that bound him when he signed up for the military. He assumed that burden, and we cannot simply set him free because we find his case sympathetic.
