Hi all, this isn't quite a medical problem but... I have oily hair, and I'm not quite sure what to do. I shower twice a day and wash my hair once a day with a clarifying shampoo. I usually keep my hair pulled back and I don't use any gel or hairspray, yet my hair gets oily after showering rather quickly.I've heard washing your hair twice a day is too much, is that true? Does anyone have any tips to alleviate this?

Oily hair?

Blow dry it

Possum, I've tried blow drying and no blow drying and it doesn't make a difference.
Helmsman, the shampoo I use is supposed to be deep cleaning and it worked really well for a while, but now it...doesn't. I think I'll try another shampoo though.
It's weird. My hair is oily, yet it tangles really easily. As soon as I brush it, its tangly again, and its annoying.
Thanks for your advice though

I have heard washing twice a day is not good too. If you put a little baby powder in your hair it kind of soaks up the oil. I have done this when I've been in a pinch. Oh, I don't mean this as a 'cure' for oily hair. It does work well though.

thanks for everyone's advice. I've changed my shampoo and its helped to an extent. I don't quite understand why my other shampoo just "stopped" working because it was really good before. Maybe it has an expiration date too? Either way, thanks!

change up ur shampoo. don;t use the same one every time. i use both pantenefor oily hair or the classic clean cuz they didn;t have it for oily hair so cc was the next and i like it better thanfor oily hair. and i use deep cleansing tresemme too. i just switch them up... when i can remeber the one i used last. lol anfd i don;t mean whenthe bottle is out either. i mean as in days/nights. one day i might use 1 and the other later that night or i might use the one kind that day for morningand night and the other the next day.
i have to wash my hair 2Xs too. it's oily too... nother thing that helps is keeping ur hands out of it. hands have oils so all ur doingis putting more oils in it.
and.. once a week i use a dadriff shampoo to keep me from getting dandruff...lol but only ONCE cuz it takes out coloring/highlights...wutever u want to call it.I wuv my hair...

You should find a shampoo that cleans, but doesn't strip your hair of the oils it needs.
Washing more than once a day is not healthy for your hair, and can make it dry.

Hm, that might have been it? I tried using conditioner in addition to my old shampoo (just trying all my options, really ) and now my hair has been really good. It's not nearly as oily, and also its actually managable and soft! Haha, I'm not quite sure how conditioner helped my oily hair, but it did. Thanks for all the advice.

washing your hair a lot can just encourage more oil, if you shampoo your hair every day or worse twice a day, you will just produce more oil, making up for all the oil you washed away before. i wash my hair every other day, and my hair doesnt get oily at all. its just when you wash with all these different chemicals, your body just gets confused and produces more oil for protection....whatever you seem to have sorted it out anyways...

Don't wash your hair everyday. (best to do it 3/4 times a week)Make sure you use a good conditioner that rinses away clean. The cheap ones leave a buildup. Use baby powder. This absorbs the oil, but don't over do it by doing it too often. Can leave the hair feeling coarse and overly dry. Try the baby powder, see how it works.

If you use conditioner make sure you just use it on the lower portion of you hair. Massaging it into your scalp can make your hair oily.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Using conditioner for the last week or so has definitely helped my hair a lot.
Amanda, thanks for the tip. Using conditioner near the scalp does have a tendency to make my hair feel oilier overall.
